We were in a purpose built horse taxi on a mild incline for around a mile. That’s no problem for the horse. Due to injuries and medical conditions, some of us physically can’t walk over a mile while carrying/pulling luggage, on cobblestone roads. Plenty of people did make the walk but I know I couldn’t make it. Horses have been aiding the evolution and development of society for centuries. Not sure why you think it’s an “American comfort” thing but there are lots of countries that still rely on horses for transpiration around the world.
