If people did thorough research they would find out that when hotshots put in the hard work searching load boards themselves and and committing to OTR driving those rates are about on point, however, It should be said that theses rates are much more realistic with a mature authority (typically 1 yr or older). New guys want to come in with major debt (truck, trailer, insurance payments) and want to make these kind of numbers and then realize that it's easy to sink into the abyss and not be profitable starting out with deep overhead. Anyways, love your work, Alex, keep this great content coming, brother!

I took offense to that comment. I’ve been a truck driver for over 23 years and never knew that I was supposed to be wearing dirty clothes and going around musty just to be considered a truck driver. But I’m going to continue to get my haircut every 3 weeks, trim my beard every other week, wear clean clothes and try my best to shower regularly so I guess I’ll never be a real truck driver to some people. Here I was thinking that was just part of being a decent human being.

Some people are organized some aren't , my truck is a mess when i'm on the road, just so much stuff to carry for two weeks on the road, i empty trash each night at the truck stops, no need to be dirty, but clutter is hard to avoid. BTW, what cooler is that you're using? Do you recommend it??

Yeah clutter is hard to avoid being on the road for a long time. Semi trucks can have it organized better since there’s more room. The fridge/freezer ai have is from Amazon. It’s been good for me. Back in the 70;s, while operating my small contract carrier, three Freightshakers pulling Utility refers, I often ran into guys not believing how great our equipment looked and what we were earning. Of course we were running under contract earning better rates than the crap other loads were paying thanks to deregulation. I believe companies, big or small, that bit into the practice of racing to the bottom of rate boards were' and are, stupid. Recently I've seen rates being offered that are rates offered 50 years ago, which are ridiculous. And guys are excepting them, which is stupid. We need to see more of these individuals go out of business. Keep up with your program. - Scorpio

Ppl are silly…I got a question though…how long is your truck and trailer while hooked up from front to back? I know some states you can’t be over 65ft long (I’m in NJ and that’s the case here for pickup-trailer combo) it seems with a 40ft trailer it depends on the length of the neck connecting to the truck? Florida I think it’s 68ft

I have actually never measured the combination of my truck and trailer. I know it’s within legal limit. Anytime you have a 40 ft you’ll be legal. I believe under 65 feet is what mine is. The deck of the trailer is 40ft and I believe the neck is 8ft. I think the truck is about 21 ft.

That’s a good week, people should o on that doesn’t happen every week. Some more some less. Then you have to take your gross and subtract your expenses truck and trailer payment fuel repairs food etc etc and then put some into your repair account. After that’s done you pay yourself.

Don’t let the nay-sayers get at you, let that shit roll off you like water on a duck. You don’t need to answer to anyone except the good Lord above. What really gets me about people like that, you’re giving them a window into your working life and a very small sliver of your personal life. They have no idea of your finances, your worth, if your wife works or not or even if you married someone that may have had some money or if you inherited any. The possibilities and scenarios are endless, but the most import thing is that it’s none of anybody’s business. When I see you, I see a man that has a pretty well rounded life. You probably don’t see your family as much as you like, but you have your shit together. A lot of truckers may fall into the category of being fat, poor health, out of shape, don’t care about their equipment, poor personal hygiene, but all of that is a choice. You don’t need to prove yourself because you’re an outlier to the norm in your profession. The person who made that comment is someone who’s probably unhappy with their situation and would prefer to bring you down to their level bc they’re too lazy to come up to yours. I appreciate you keeping it real and sharing you’re experiences as you truck-on through life. Be safe.

I am on the road for at least two months at a time so my family can have a good life so my kids can have everything they need. At the same time I have to take care of myself and somehow enjoy my life on the road too. Gym is a must for me. I used to go everyday before I got into trucking so I at least have to keep up when I have a break with work. Appreciate you my friend. Thanks for the support. 👍🏻

Alex, is it possible to Hotshot on the weekend? I have a 2004 diesel truck but I don't have a trailer. Any advise I can get to get started?

Weekend is not a good time because most businesses are closed and brokers don’t work on the weekends. You have to be ready to be on the road at least for a few weeks at a time. Mentally prepare yourself for that. That’s my first advice because if you have family and kids, it’s tough to be away. Try to have low overhead. That way you don’t have too many expenses. If there are certain things that you are interested in knowing just ask. 👍🏻

@@rayfletcher-yh3ns That is a lot. Register your business with your state. Apply for DOT number. Purchase commercial insurance for truck and trailer. Apply for authority. There are other registrations that need to be made. I can’t remember them all. UCR, apportioned plates, IFTA. As far as getting loads, you can sign up for a load board or find a dispatcher that will book loads for you.
