Gigi lowkey is a tsukkomi. She's very perceptive and witty. BUT, Gigi ALWAYS chooses to play the boke because it makes herself and others laugh. I think it's also why she makes friends so easily, she's fun and easy to be around. It takes a real genius to be this stupid and chaotic lol.

I think Calli nailed it on the head putting her on the words 'acts like boke.' Remember how she described her room? Christmas tree up all year and her bed is basically a second storage closet lmao

In terms of boke and tsukkomi, I feel like Subaru-Chan is like the ultimate is tsukkomi/ acts tsukkomi of all holo members. I mean she has her boke moments but every clip I’ve seen of her has her being very deliberate in her intention, like some kind of a Shonen protagonist. Even her police segments, she plays the tsukkomi. In this essay I will…

imo Gigi fulfills a similar role to Polka: She's aware of what the situation calls for and intentionally injects just the right amount of chaos into the system. Most of the time she's in control of the situation, even if it doesn't look like it.

yeah with timechaser, it's basically a coin flip to see who's tsukkomi and who's boke. i think one comment i saw that put it really well was 'gigi and kronii are like different flavours of the same sarcastic asshole' or something to that effect.

Yep, great comedy duos tend to work like this here too. Bert(tsukommi) and Ernie(Boke), Abbot(t) and Costello(b), I would argue that Community's Troy and Abed are like this, but they also swap positions too.
@mericanmeal18 күн бұрын
She is extremely comfortable with either role, but her goal is to make the other person shine as much as possible. By being the boke she can more easily adjust to the other person and keep things flowing smoothly. She's basically said during enreco that if anyone wanted to be the boke she would gladly be tsukkomi. I think she's easily near the top intelligence wise, but it's like calli said, being smart doesn't matter for if you are the boke or the tsukkomi.
@LilianaC892718 күн бұрын
I happened to be in this stream and yea a lot of us were pointing out she is smart, but I don't know how many others were saying it in the context I was. GG is not only smart smart but she is also smart about comedy and how she interacts with her audience. Like Shiori, Tenchou, Fauna and the others who are two or four steps ahead of chat or audiences. I agree that Tsukomi doesn't mean "smart" and Boke means "dumb" but saying GG is smart is just shorthand for saying GG knows how to make calls on the fly on how to handle a situation to keep things going towards how she wants to be perceived.

I had to google this to get a better handle on what Calli is talking about: "In manzai 漫才, a type of comedy performed by a duo of comedians, one comedian plays dumb, by saying things wrong, getting things wrong, or doing stupid things, while the other one retorts, saying what the first one did wrong, or pointing out how stupid it was. Every time the first comedian says something wrong or stupid, that's called a boke, and every time the other comedian retorts or questions a boke, that's called a tsukkomi ツッコミ. Since this type of comedy always has one person doing the boke and one doing the tsukkomi, the comedians are also said to be the boke or the tsukkomi of a duo." The problem is that I don't hink a lot of the girls in Hololive are actually doing this type of comedy, which isn't common in Western culture. At 0:34 in the video, the editor inserts a TV Tropes equivalence to the traditional "straight man" and "punchline deliverer" in many Western comedy duos. The problem with that kind of duality is that it isn't the same as manzai comedy from Japan. Honestly, I don't think that many Hololive girls actually do manzai comedy at all; being from Anglo culture, they're practitioners of Western comedy, where one person is "serious" and sets up the second guy to then deliver the punchline. The serious person or "straight man" isn't acting "dumb", as in manzai, though -- quite the opposite, oftentimes. If anything, the guy delivering the punchline is often more "idiotic". (In Western comedy, the counterpuncher is the one more likely to be silly, whereas in Japan, the counterpuncher is the one pointing out the first person's silliness.) I think about interactions between Nerissa and Shiori as a very good example of the Western dynamic in action. Oftentimes, Nerissa will say something very conventional and then Shiori says something subversive to contradict or undercut what Nerissa says. But this dynamic isn't one where one of them is saying something dumb in the Japanese manzai sense. Rather, it's a form of banter where one of them makes a statement and the other subverts the statement. In Nerissa and Shiori's typical dynamic, there is no boke at all. There's just subversion of expectation, which is the default modality of Western humor -- taking what the audience expects to hear and and then turning it on its head for comedic effect. Most Western humor is subversive, in one way or another. The humor derives from tweaking the beak of societal expectations; but in the Japanese manzai humor, it's just the opposite. Someone says something wrong and the humor derives from seeing him corrected, ie, seeing societal expectations vindicated and reinforced. In this way, manzai comedy could be said to be the opposite of Western comedy. Another really good example of the cultural difference in humor, although not directly related to what Calli was talking about, is the role of sarcasm. Many Westerners enjoy sarcastic humor, the whole point of which is to subvert the normal meaning of a statement. But in Japan, sarcasm infamously doesn't work at all. Westerners have been baffled for decades upon traveling to Japan and finding out that the people there just don't comprehend sarcasm whatsoever. The Japanese are just not as prone towards subversive humor, in any of its forms.

Interesting, what is your take for FuwaMoco in this? They grew with japanese comedy and don't really know almost anything western. Which one do you think they are doing? I don't see them having fixed roles with how smart and dumb can each of them be in different topics.
@InceyWincey16 күн бұрын
I think this is an extremely good analysis of the subject. I also think it is worth noting that none of the talents are actually duos, so the binary roles don’t really fit. Most of their streaming is done solo, which requires them to play both the comedian and the straight man depending on what chat is doing. Also most of their collabs involve groups, so who is the straight man and who is the comedian is usually very fluid depending on the situation. Finally, speaking of subversion, something that happens often in the interactions with the girls is that the straight man turns out to be the real comedian. Mumei does this exceptionally well, pretending to be oblivious to what is going on only to turn the whole situation on its head and leave the other person at a complete loss for words.

Important discussion when it comes to Hololive. They are comedians after all.

An interesting thing to note is how some dynamics shift based on who is present, or over time. Gigi's willing to take a hard left into tsukkomi for anyone, but she seems to almost have a rivalry with Biboo for the boke position in collabs, Ina took a rare tsukkomi stance towards Sana in their collabs, Calli and Kiara are now in the exact opposite sort of dynamic they were known for having in year 1, and Mumei shifts between boke and tsukkomi as often as her mood changes and everyone else just has to figure it out. "So boke she forces everyone around her to be tsukkomi" is also a hilarious thing to say about Gigi, since the only others in EN to have borne that title are Sana and HAACHAMA.
