Wild Bill!! Timing and bird body language. You bet. And for sure most people on public land overuse their hen calls. One thing y'all didn't touch on is using drake calls. We get a lot of widgeon and gads on Lake Fork and Cooper, and I usually have those species in my spread and use a mix of gad, widgeon and mallard drakes with a whistle, even greenwings when we see them. Mixing that in with hen and maybe another guy on hen...music to their ears.

I believe it is both how you blow the call, and when you blow the call. The call is the most important tool you take too the field. You could be the best shot in the world. Shooting the best ammo, with the best decoy spread in the area, and still fail too kill birds. All because of your calling presentation. You have to sound like a duck, but call based on your surroundings AKA available cover, hunting pressure, and decoy spread. A word champion caller can impress my ears way more than a mallard ducks in the wrong setting.
