It's probably already been mentioned, but in order to make the monkeys useful, hold Q then click on one of the monkeys (they'll run to you when you hold Q) then click teach. Once you've done that, do an action that you want the monkey to do (ie, hit an enemy to make them fight for you, hit a tree to make them chop down trees and bushes, pick up an item from one area and drop it in another to make them gather, cook some food at a campfire to make them cook, etc). They'll need tools for certain actions (same as you do) so you just need to press space next to them with the correct tool selected and you will give it to them to use (the tool will run out after a certain amount of uses still).
