As someone who’s played an embarrassing amount of hours on this game... it was painful to watch you fail miserably hahaha. You’ve got to spam farms and plantations as well as logging camps. The more docks you have the more money you make because you make money from exporting. Upgrade your docks for quicker shipping. Then create industries as soon as you have a lot of crops. Like lumber mills or rum distilleries. Make sure you’re building Lots of housing near jobs because people don’t like to travel far for work. Issue edicts to make people happy and extend your mandate with the crown as often as possible. Lastly starting out, build a library church and grocery stores so people have needs fulfilled as well as caverns because they get bored. Check your almanac often to see how happy your island is :)
