Bob says, "This tune is Calloway (sometimes spelled Callaway or Calahan). I learned it from Dwight Diller who learned it from the West Virginia Hammons family. In his book of tunes, "Yew Pine Mountain", Diller relates this story: "...Callaway was supposed to have asked for his fiddle on the gallows. He played this tune and said if anyone could play it, to step forward and do so. And if they can, they can have the fiddle. No one stepped forward so he broke it over his knee. And you know the rest of the story." The Soldier's Joy insert is just a variation of the high part of Soldier's Joy that I came up with a while back. For whatever reason, it seemed to fit in and give the tune a little variety or surprise."
Filmed by Joy Lynn King and Steve Baughman in Bishop, CA on February 19, 2019.
