I studied classical guitar for 7 years, but stopped my formal studies long ago to pursue the sciences - yet music had always acted as a balance for me, a sort of personal meditation. My grandmother passed away last month, and coincidentally I had requested this song on John's patreon the month before... Listening to John's playing his version of these old favourites, and learning some of his arrangements - especially this one - are helping me get through these trying times.

What can I do more to learn this style of playing? I'm doing scales, but I feel there is more. One month into learning and only know some chords.

Just start with easier tracks. FF8’s Breezey is a good beginner’s finger picking piece. Not a terrible amount of difficult positions, and pretty simple picking pattern. You need to find things that are only slightly more difficult each time, so you can build up your skills. Jumping too far ahead and trying a piece like this will just not do any beginner any favors as they’d just be more likely to quit with frustration.
