Astonishing Glasgow

Astonishing Glasgow

Күн бұрын

The main events of this episode took place exactly 235 years to the day of this video being uploaded.
I have visited the Calton burial ground to tell the story of the Calton martyrs who were killed while striking for better wages.
A summer of strikes in Scotland shows that 235 years later, workers still have to fight for what we are worth but at least in 2022 there is no threat of being shot in the process.
I also tell you how Glasgow has links to Abraham Lincoln and the events of the American civil war.
If you want to get in touch, leave a comment here or via my social media pages on Facebook and Instagram pages here;

Thanks again for watching and see you next time in Astonishing Glasgow;
Dave.

Thanks I came across your site by accident. Captivated by I I have watched several of your casts. Born & raised in Glasgow. I knew of some of the legand told none of the East End, where I was born and lived until married and still living there for a year then moving to Cumbernauld and stayig there a few years before moving to East Renfrewshie. I'm off to watch more of your enjoyable casts.

I lived on Loom St (a tiny Street which I believe is long gone now ) off Stephehson St. As a little boy I'm sure I played 'sogers' in that very same buriel ground on Abercrombie St. Left the Calton in and around the late 60's, eventually to emigrate to Canada 1978. Never been back. Subed and liked cheers

There's a wall memorial stone dedicated to Allan Pinkerton underneath the railway bridge up that side street between the Citizens Theatre and the railway arches. I only discovered it by accident a few years ago when I went that way as a shortcut.

So while listening, I looked up Portioners. Someone who presided over a small portion of a larger estate. Also, younger sons who each inherited a portion of the family farm.

Another good video. 👍 On the subject of martyrs in Glasgow obviously. You may wish to conduct a production, in regards to the Polmadie martyrs in the 1700s. Again 3 men were murdered by government forces for being Covenanters. The graves of which can be found in Old Cathcart Church off Carmunock road.

Thanks Gimpy Gunner. The Polmadie martyrs has been on my list for a long time as I live directly across the road from the old parish graveyard. I am holding local stories for the moment as I am awaiting knee surgery and will tackle them when I am recovering and cant venture far from home.

Another pleasing video. I used to visit the Carlton burial ground in the 90s, before it got the new gates and external flagstones, depicting the historical events. Interesting to note, that no funding for the upgrade was forthcoming from Glasgow city council. One wonders why. I believe another plaque speaks of the restoration work to the burial ground, and it was financed by (?)... Can't recall. Am I correct in thinking that Abercrombie St is where The Old Carlton ended and Bridgeton proper begins? Too, just along the road outside the Olympia is one of The Mile End Quarter stones. Granted it was an area in the East End, like Barrowfiield and Camlachie, but I always wondered if they had their own distinct identities? Cheers. Jock

It's interesting that you didn't mention the role the Pinkerton Detective Agency played in breaking strikes at the peak of the US labour movement. Or have I got that wrong? Would love to hear anything you know about that. I think his blue plaque is somewhere on the bricks on the railway viaduct behind the mosque, or possibly under one of the bridges?
@AstonishingGlasgow
@AstonishingGlasgow Жыл бұрын
I was really only covering Pinkerton the man as that's something that connects back to Glasgow. If I was to make a video about the Pinkerton detective agency then I would look into that but the video would be less about Glasgow and more about an American company so not really Astonishing Glasgow.
