🎥 BlackTree TV Saturday Morning Feature: Halls of Anger (1970) | Black History Month Spotlight 🎥
This Saturday Morning Feature marks a special occasion-the first weekend of Black History Month-with a socially charged and thought-provoking drama: Halls of Anger (1970). Starring Calvin Lockhart, this film tackles issues of racism, integration, and identity in the American school system, making it a must-watch classic in the history of Black cinema.
Plot Summary:
Calvin Lockhart stars as Doug Williams, a former college basketball star who returns to his old high school as an assistant principal, only to find himself at the center of racial tensions. With the school’s sudden integration bringing a wave of white students into a previously all-Black institution, conflicts escalate as prejudice, misunderstandings, and violence threaten to erupt. Williams must navigate hostility from both sides, fighting to keep the peace while standing firm in his convictions.
This film is a raw, emotional, and gripping look at the struggles of integration in the late 1960s and the challenges Black educators faced in a system resistant to change.
Notable Cast & Director:
🔹 Calvin Lockhart - A commanding presence in Black cinema, Lockhart (Cotton Comes to Harlem, Uptown Saturday Night) delivers a powerful performance as an educator fighting for justice.
🔹 Jeff Bridges - In one of his earliest roles, Bridges (The Big Lebowski, Crazy Heart) plays a white student grappling with the racial tensions around him.
🔹 James A. Watson Jr. - A strong performance as a student activist who refuses to back down.
🔹 Janet MacLachlan - Known for her roles in Sounder and Black Girl, MacLachlan adds emotional depth as a teacher caught in the crossfire.
🔹 John McGiver - A veteran character actor (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), playing the school’s conflicted head administrator.
🔹 Paul Bogart (Director) - A director known for tackling social issues in film and television, bringing grit and realism to this school drama.
Why This Film Matters for Black History Month:
We’ve selected Halls of Anger as a Black History Month feature because of its bold exploration of racial integration in schools. Released just a few years after the Civil Rights Movement, the film reflects the real-life struggles Black students and educators faced in newly desegregated schools. It serves as a reminder of the long fight for equal education and the resilience of Black leaders in the face of adversity.

There were a lot of people who became big time actors and directors in this film. Many of the black actors and actresses I’ve seen in films before never knew about this movie thank you for sharing this. Thank you Black Tree TV.

Absolutely correct. I'm a little cloudy on names but I recognized the young faces instantly. The guy that plays JT was on an episode of What's Happening as a cop and also in Good Times as Thelma's boyfriend that was married. The brother that the sisters was mad at for dating the white girl was also on Good Times as one of Thelma's boyfriends. Then there was one of the students that was a jailer in one episode of Sanford And Son when Fred, Lamont and Rollo got mistakenly caught up in a pornography ring and in another episode he was a cop posing as an EMT when Fred & Lamont went to the bank to take out a loan and the bank got robbed while they were there. Then the brother with the facial skin discoloration that didn't want to learn how to read was in a lot of stuff back in the day too. Lastly, there's the young Rob Reiner from All In The Family. Archie would have been proud of meathead and his usage of the N word. Seriously though, he went on to become a great director.

Many of the actors in the film "Halls Of Anger" ended up having a career in both film and television. The director Paul Bogart wanted to fire actor Calvin Lockhart from this film because of what he viewed as Lockhart's arrogant behavior and not wanting to work with the director. Also, it was written at the time of this film release that fights broke out amongst the younger cast members. RIP Calvin Lockhart RIP Janet McLachlin RIP Ed Asner

Too bad he threw the paint on the Muriel. Ed Asner was quiet before Mary Tyler Moore Show +. Rob Reiner went to All in the Family. Jeff Bridges is Jeff Bridges. Film sends a few messages, powerful movie which may of lead to a series called "Room 222".
