haha same. It's crazy, the book mentions incident after incident of this kind and you think he's exagerating or taking stuff out of context. Then you look it up anf find out: Nope, the Americans really fucked this country hard.

During the 60's there was a spontaneous political education that occurred among the American public. Through sit-ins, protests, and informal debates and discussions many people came to oppose the war in Vietnam and American foreign policy. These people were said to suffer from the "Vietnam syndrome". Those who rejected the truth suffered cognitive dissonance and continue to justify and unconditionally support every action taken by the U.S. military.

The cognitive dissonance is yours The #1 failure of America post WWII is the failure to contain communism. In 2022, the communists are past the gate. They’re at the head of the table In retrospect, it would have been worth killing 300 million innocent civilians around the world if it also destroyed the 10 million communists around the world responsible for killing America, Western Europe, and Aus/NZ

I know Safer was there on the 5th when D/1/5 under Captain West did the sweep. We were the blocking force on that sweep. On our (H/2/9) sweep on the 18th, like I said, the ville was deserted. We came under fire at the end of the sweep and called in 105 arty fire, which fell short and hit us instead. We lost one Marine to sniper fire, and one had an arm almost shot off (Cpl. Oller). Captain Joe Guggino (now retired Major) managed to check fire on the arty after about 12 rounds walked our lines.

It was D/1/9 in the Safer film and Captain West was the Delta Company commander in August 1965. I was a L/CPL [0311] in 2nd platoon of Delta Company in August 1965. Delta Company Marines are seen in the Safer/Cam Ne film. In brief, Safer's report is very "incomplete, " highly "slanted" and ...... The Cam Ne hamlets harbored many "Viet Cong" and were used as a base of operations for at least a month prior to August 5. These hamlets, especially two of them, were found to be "highly" fortified, contained "many" (Viet Cong) weapons and had "several" skirmishes (between Marines & Viet Cong) prior to the August 5 events. The local [Cam Ne] inhabitants did not want the Viet Cong in their hamlet complex. The Viet Cong [invaders] treated the inhabitants terribly - killing, stealing, raping, controlling, et cetera. The peaceful locals [most of them] became unwillingly "caught up" in the horrors of war. Enough for now, if you want to know the "whole truth" about the events and history surrounding the Cam Ne hamlets on and around August 5 [1965], read the several "good" articles available on the internet. G.M.

President Eisenhower, when told we would need 3/4 of a million troops in Vietnam for at least 30 years in order to install a pro American government, refused to send in American troops. The US Military can defeat a country like Grenada and install a pro US Government, but when faced with a populous country the US military has not won a war since Korea. The military is out of Iraq and soon will be out of Afghanistan. To paraphrase Clint Eastwood "A country has to know its limits."

If you were on the August 18, 1965 mission USMC records state no VC were found and No US casualties were taken. Safer was there on August 5, 1965. You should be a commentator for Fox since you are so good at rewriting history.

I know. The Command Chronicles for that day left out (on purpose?) the friendly fire incident and the firefight across the paddies from us at the end of the sweep. I have the photos of the damage done to the ville around us. I'm still in touch with my company commander, Joe Guggino, and he was the one who called "Check Fire!" on the Arty frequency. The artillery unit across the river was unit code named "Sharpshooter," and the battery was 105mm towed howitzers. The FO and his radioman were killed in the first air burst, hence no cease fire call until our Skipper got on the arty freq.

+Maggie Azmitia Two years two late, but I saw your comment: Safer's original report on the village of Cam Ne aired on CBS Evening News, August 5, 1965. The look-back narration is from a 60 Minutes episode in which Morley Safer reflected on his career. A more recent look back is also in youtube. The one here is possibly from the 1990s--he was still smoking, something he gave up in more recent years.

@johntellerman1 This had to be the most frustrating war to fight. VC cadres were imbedded in almost every South Vietnamese village. If the SV would have stood up to the VC, the outcome would have been much different.

The huge problem was that every village was ripe with Viet Cong cadres. How do you separate the peaceful villagers from the VC? It made for a tough, almost impossible war to win.

This is one of the main reason why America lost this war because of the coverage. I watched as a kid these reports and why they show this. Why is it news worthy in a war. We sit and want democracy, but at what cost. People comment from the safety of there homes and question the reason of others on how to provide the protection we so deserve and don't realize the cost of having a democratic society. War is hell, but yet people criticize the actions of these wars. Please support our troops

Typo fool. Safer didn't have to stay in the area and we did. Cam Ne was a tunnel complex and HQ for the VC. The village was a cover for the complex and nothing more.

This is the biggest load of crap about Vietnam there ever was. I was there when this happened and Safer lies through his teeth. Only about four huts were burned, and that was because they disguised VC tunnel entrances and we took fire from them. This incident was with D/1/5 as my company H/2/9 serving as the blocking force. Then my company swept Cam Ne again on August 12th, '65, and almost every hooch was intact. Cam Ne was the regimental headquarters for the Doc Lap Vietcong battalion.

I was an [0311 ~ rifleman] with D/1/9 [2nd Platoon] at Cam Ne. It was not [D/1/5]. My fellow Marines and I were in the "Cam Ne complex" [hamlets] several times in July and August 1965. In short, Morley got a lot wrong and stated misinformation. Readers are only to read the many TRUE accounts available on the internet to gain a full understanding of the timeline and circumstances around the so-called "Cam Ne incident." I'm 72 years-old now and "wish" those that write about Cam Ne would tell the Whole Story. Craig Roberts [USMC, Da Nang] has written much information about his experiences and views and should be read to gain additional information. I rec'd a GSW thru the right bicep while on patrol near Cam Ne and was taken to an Army hospital in Nha Trang in September 1965 and was returned to my unit [1/9] a few weeks later for 8+ months longer in Viet Nam. Hey Marine, you still kicking? The event took place on August 3. I, like you, recall less than ten huts burned. Safer's estimates are ignorantly high. So, he reported inaccurate and incomplete data. Safer's report is erroneous just as are many of the current news reports that the Gaza hospital was bombed by Israel when in fact it was a stray bomb from the Hamas troops that hit the parking lot of the hospital. And the SHOW goes on. [Gary McCutchan, 11/15/23]

Hi Gary. Yes, the "report" Safer puked out was a total fabrication but it was to match the new anti-war media agenda. When my company, H/2/9 did the sweep later I don't remember seeing any burned huts. The most damage there happened that day when our own 105mm artillery from Sharpshooter across the river fired a short round barrage on our positions at the south end of the ville at the end of our sleep when our new FO called in our coordinates during a firefight and sent "fire for effect" instead of registration. Friendly fire is NOT friendly! @@USMC0311PurpleHeart

Safer flew in with his cameraman in a helicopter, stayed a short time, did a few interviews with grunts who were just part of the operation, then flew out to do his drama crap. During our sweep on 18 August, no one was in the ville. The place was full of booby traps, punji pits, loose animals, and covered a huge tunnel complex. It was the HQ for the Doc Lap VC battalion. We took fire at the end of the sweep from a company of hard core VC and I lost half my platoon. Safer is a comme puke.
