On November 21, 2008, Newton was arrested on felony charges of burglary, larceny, and obstruction of justice on an accusation that he stole a laptop computer from another University of Florida student. He was subsequently suspended from the team. Campus police "tracked the stolen laptop to the athlete...Newton tossed the computer out his dorm window in a humorously ill-advised attempt to hide it from cops."All charges against Newton were dropped after he completed a court-approved pre-trial diversion program. "I believe that a person should not be thought of as a bad person because of some senseless mistake that they made," said Newton in 2010. "I think every person should have a second chance. If they blow that second chance, so be it for them." Newton announced his intention to transfer from Florida three days before the Gators' national championship win over Oklahoma. In November 2010, Thayer Evans of Fox Sports reported that Newton faced potential expulsion from the University of Florida for three instances of academic dishonesty, prior to transferring.

I get what he’s saying about it turning out to be a blessing. But let’s be real…don’t matter if he stayed a back up and went undrafted. He was ALWAYS going to be a star in the NFL. Don’t matter if he walked onto an NFL practice. As soon as ppl saw him play he was gonna be signed. Even when the panthers picked him up the plan was for him to sit behind Jimmy for a year. After 2 preseason games he won the job. His talent was undeniable.
@SoloQueFine2 ай бұрын
Yea that’s not how it works. As a UDFA his job would’ve been to throw interceptions to the DBs. He was not overly accurate when he came into the league (or ever for that matter) so he would not have a stuck around long enough to play QB. With his size and athleticism, he prolly makes a practice squad as a TE and maybe gets a chance due to injuries.

I think portraying it as “a life raft”is probably the wrong message to send to young people watching. If he didn’t steal the laptop, he probably would still have transferred and redshirted for a year at another D1 instead of having to go through Juco and still end up where he’s at, with the level of talent he had. If you stole the laptop, just admit to it and don’t try to change the narrative. The show probably blew it out of proportion, but there’s police reports of the situation, so certain things did happen.

It's a really hard to win a lawsuit like that when you're a public figure in the United States. Not impossible but extremely unlikely cuz you have to prove actual malice and for a show that has a warning at the front that a lot of the events are fictionalized gives them a cover legally. You can make a pretty strong case that the laws are not protective enough for the privacy of these people but that's why you see a lot of these libel or defamation type lawsuits take place in England instead of the US when possible
