Was lucky enough to grow up in Orofino, Idaho from 1997 and on, saw the BN bringing massive log and lumber trains down the mountain from Pierce, Idaho, then up the river to Lewiston. Watched the last BN train with 2173,2756, and 2882 leave when CSP took over in '98, then subsequently watched the first train with the new CSP B23-7's come in the next day. Eventually got to do a cab ride with turns at the throttle (and horn, of course) in CSP 3 with my brother in summer 1998 thanks to a very nice, generous, and easygoing crew. Those B23-7 beasts are another level to ride in. Definitely miss 'em.

Great railfan. We had Railnet where I live for a few years but then CN bought them out and took over the yard. use to see them everymorning when I got up early because I live only about 75 or 100 yards away from the tracks.

Awesome video, thank you for documenting this amazing piece of railroad before it was too late, having two of my engines makes it even better. Is this track all torn up now, i heard part of it was purchased by another shortline. Btw are your pics available online, would love to see those too. And your son did a great job, better than alot of my vids:P

If you've ever seen the movie "Breakhart Pass", starring Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland, that movie was shot on some of the railroad line between Lapwai and Winchester, Idaho, back in 1976.

Theres still train parts up near the top, north of Reubens at the first tunnel. I remember seeing them around 1988.

Pretty cool, especially for those of us who didn't get to see trains up on those trestles. Thanks! Anyone know why 7 or so loaded centerbeam cars went up the canyon and 2 still full ones returned? What industry were they serving?

There is such great tourism potential for this railroad! If the current operator can rebuild the trestle that burned at MP 21.3 and reopen the 2nd Sub, running tourist trains up Lapwai Canyon between Culdesac and Ruebens could be a great moneymaker! Really any stretch of Camas Prairie track could be great for a tourist train operation. It's all beautiful!

All of the trestles of the second sub are in very poor condition. Even in the last years of the line they had deferred maintenance. Someone who worked on the railroad told me it would take a billion dollars of repair for insurance companies to sign off for freight rail traffic. Passenger rail traffic has even more stricter standards. Its not going to happen sadly. I wonder if they could do excursions on the 4th subdivision? Its still intact from what I've heard and this video said it was the most scenic. But the upgrade to passenger rail standards might be too much plus it only goes 15 mph.

Wow, what an historic video! Too bad that much of line is now used to store empty centerbeam flat cars. It is an awesome line, I hope that it can be preserved.

CSP Railnet had 4 B23-7's numbered 1-4. I'm nearly certain these were all former Southern Railway units that had their original high short hoods modified to low hood configuration.

Camas Prairie RailNet originally had 7 B23-7's, #'s 1-7. Sadly, after about a year or two, they sold 5-7 off to the Georgia Florida RailNet due to bad business decisions on the part of a higher up at the company.
