Tug-of-war is a very popular game, played worldwide. In some countries, it is a pure contest
of strength between two teams, whereas in the others, including Cambodia, it is a ritual game
with socio-religious significance. In Cambodia, the tugging ritual game Teanh Prot is played
during the traditional Khmer New Year, celebrated mid-April, and during Chlong Chet, a
ceremony associated with rice production, which is performed shortly after the New Year.
“Tugging rituals and games” was registered as a multinational nomination by Cambodia, the
Republic of Korea, Viet Nam, and the Philippines, and inscribed on the UNESCO
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 2 December 2015.
