Did you know that nearly 95% of the food names in Cambodia are borrowed from the Thai language? Cambodians have adopted recipes from Thailand and named their food after the Thai language. Due to Thailand's long-standing influence on Cambodia, Cambodians mistakenly believe that these foods are original Cambodian dishes. However, if you ask Cambodians what the food names they use every day mean, they cannot answer because the food names are not words with meanings in Khmer, but rather words in the Thai language, each with its own meaning.

It's a fact that most Cambodians don't know. Cambodia has received a lot of influence in food, music, and dress from Thailand. By talking about food Go back 30-40 years ago. Cambodian workers come to sell labor. in many Thai restaurants They have gained knowledge. and when returning to his house They went and adapted it according to the raw materials they had. and the flavor he likes and give it a new name.

Cambodian never forget to add credit the original country, like Tong Yam is originally Thai we never claim Tongyam is Khmer food. Did you provide a credit of Somtum to Laos?

This is because when this food was created, Laos was originally called Lan Xang, a part of the Kingdom of Siam before the French came to colonize and take Lan Xang from Siam. This led to Lan Xang being separated into another country, which is now Laos. This is the reason why the cuisine of the northeastern region of Thailand is similar to that of Laos. 😉

And where did it come from? It certainly came from Western merchants who came to trade by ships in the region. In those days, Ayutthaya was a land of trade from Westerners. Does Laos have a sea? How is it that papaya seeds grew in Laos before Siam? If you don't believe me You can search for information about papaya.

Actually the sauce with the veggies are for the fried/grilled fish. For the beef lok lak, the sauce that goes with it should be a lime, salt and black pepper dipping sauce. And usually the beef sticks usually/should come with pickle carrots and daikons/papaya.

Also for the curry, it is normally eaten with either the rice or rice noodles like you did or dip it with a French baguette as well.

Loved how you went over the history of Cambodia 🇰🇭 great job selection and variety of Khmer cuisine to try. In regards to the fried fish.., You are supposed to wrap up a piece of the fish with the noodles, herbs and veggies together and dip it in that tamarind sauce. Beef lok lak should be dipped in a lime and pepper sauce. Great job showcasing Khmer cuisine! Much love ❤️

There is a really good book called "First They Killed My Father" by Loung Ung. It is about her and her family's first hand experience of living through the khmer rouge regime. It is really emotional, but really highly recommend it. If you decide to read it, I recommend reading "Lucky Child", right after. She writes about her experience of being a refugee.

7:20 Beef lok lak is server with rice and lime salt and pepper dipping sauce guys, And the basket of greens and rice noodles that you said was supposed to be eaten with the fried crispy fish and the sweet tangy tamarind sauce. Glad to see you enjoy our food. You can enjoy the food however you want but if you want to have it like the local. The beef lok lak should go with rice (a fried egg on top will be even better). The curry should go with the noodle like a noodle soup or you can just have it with baguette. The beef stick normally would be serve with pickle vegetable and is amazing as a baguette filling! 😊

Some of my favorite Khmer dish. Grilled or deep fried meat are typically washed down or eaten with mango/papaya salad or pickled food. You can drastically change the profile of the curry or nohm-bahn-chok by squeezing lots of lime and sprinkle salt or fish sauce - half of the time, I like mine like that.

Curry Chicken is normally eaten with the Cambodian Rice Noodle or baguettes. The way to eat it with rice noodle is the same as u were eating Khmer noodle (Green soup) with all those veggies and a hint of lemon squeezed.
