Nice video, I hope I'll do this one day too! One advice though, I wouldn't slide down in crampons like you did. If they grip while you slide down, you can mess yourself up seriously.

What a great video man! I did the climb in October and wished I had captured more than what I had on video, especially what you have to do in the dark.

@7:22... tried a similar glissade at mt blanc massif -- a fellow climber followed me and sadly broke a buried snow bridge. 15h passed trying to locate & extract him. but mt. rescue advised crevassed 200m+ deep. bc no sounds were ever heard, he was presumed deceased. upshot: on-trail walking or glissading (if you must) is the only option on descent

I had the privilege of leading the first, unsupported Irish Defence Forces expedition to the Himalayas where we all (4) summited Island Peak, no support, no Sherpas, just four guys with a mission. In comparison to today, there was one one small commercial expedition at Base Camp, and they arrived after we had the place to ourselves for two days. Things change over time !!.

Awesome work again Cam. I remember what it was like hiking between 3000 and 3500 meters and how it slowed me down a fair bit. Can't imagine 6000+ I would love to try it sometime though.

I mostly just used my GoPro 12 with a head mount. Some Insta 360 and iPhone footage as well. I have a few spare batteries for each. Man you’ll have the best time climbing! I miss it!

Congratulations on succeeding, last year in September 2023 my team and I only made it to 6000 m and had to descend due to weather conditions and reduced enthusiasm to continue...

Great stuff Cam! How did you find Island Peak compared to Lobuche East? I am hoping to make it to one of the trekking peaks in the Himalayas one day - based on the videos, Lobuche looked a fair bit steeper and more technical? Which did you find more enjoyable as a novice mountaineer? Thanks!

What sort of minimum physical fitness is required to summit Island Peak?

You definitely want to be comfortable climbing 2,000m of vertical in a day and have general endurance to keep pushing for up to like 18 hours. Tough summit day

Anything with a harness is technical mate. This isn't hiking
@Bamcostock9 ай бұрын
@@stvarq relative to hiking this type of climbing may seem technical yes. Compared to proper alpine climbing and mountaineering, this is the safest and least technical type of climbing. Jumarring is an entry level / beginner mountaineering technique for being guided up peaks.
