I live in Connecticut and the electric rates just went up catastrophically, like around 28%. I only know one person who was dumb enough to buy a EV and he's madder than hornets. $75K for a car you have to bring back to the dealer for repairs (big $$$) and maintenance (big $$$), and his operating costs are the same if not worse then if he bought a $23K Honda gasoline powered car. The resale value is horrendous and the batteries cost a fortune and have to be replaced every 5 or 7 years depending on your climate and use. EV's are a total rip off.

Goverment made zero effort to make this sour candy of "EV rip-off" sweeter: here in CH there is no difference if you have an EV or a gas guzzler. Tax is calculated from horse power rating. only moroon buys a $75k ev and then compares it to $23k ICE car . no replacement till 100,000 km for older ev's. New ones can go upto 250,000 km and still it retains 80% of charge....so it can go another 250,000 km before you need to replace it for lot less than you originally paid for as batery cost has been going down

​@@mssandybeach1 It's not like they are lemons and I wouldn't say they are a scam, but they are just portrayed better then they actually are and have drawbacks that most people aren't familiar with because of the new tech. Electric cars are worse in the cold. They aren't better for the environment the way a lot of people drive. Like solar panels, they rely on rare earth minerals and have a limited lifespan. Recycling isn't 100% efficient and not everyone will recycle. Electric cars make it easy to design systems in the car that allows someone else to remotely shut down your car or restrict your movement. (Trust your government?) If you get into a crash (that doesn't total the car) you need to have the battery checked to see if it is likely to start a fire in your garage. If there is a small problem with the battery (assuming they can even find it) from the crash it would cost thousands to replace. Not sure how insurance will see the issue. All in all EVs aren't bad, but they aren't for everyone. Instead of our governments informing us about the limits of EVs or simply keeping their mouths shut about them, they act like EVs are a cure-all.

After 18 months and 18000 km the spreadsheet shows the costs are virtually the same. They use grid electricity and a piddly little charger at home. And don't forget, a Tesla costs several thousand more to buy than a conventional car ($20K more in Ozz) That's a bloody lot of petrol.

Precisely what problem would that be? You are aware that any decent battery pack is good for at least three times the road mileage of your petrol engine? At the end of its useful life in the car, it can be sold for thousands of dollars for off grid energy storage.

Right now, here in California, only 1.9% of vehicles are electric and they consume 17% of the electricity to charge them. It’s a super dumb idea to have a battery powered petrol car that take two different and seperate types of recharging drivable miles. Don't forget if you happen to live in a cold climate, your EVs are going to cost considerably more to operate and your travel distance can be reduced up to 1/3rd or more, depending on the temperature and the make of the EV.

i go to the city twice a week for work and there is always a car pluged in charging right by the freeway off ramp and there is never anybody around ever...its their when i go by in the morning and still there when i head home...emty allways...

While planning for my next car, EVs were my first option. But after learning about the high purchase price, the battery fire risk, the high cost of using public chargers, and upcoming electric taxes intended ti compensate for the loss of fuel taxes... it quickly became obvious that its "low cost of operation" is a myth in most real life cases. So, for 2023 it became obvious that my most cost effective options for total cost of ownership (in the US) is either a low cost but reliable ICE, or a PHEV whose cost after the $7,500 federal tax credit is reasonable. Sorry environment, but corporate (and even government) greed are slowing the conversion to non-polluting fuel. I am all for helping, but not if it endangers my financial future.

My mate bought an electric motor bike here in New Zealand. One years registration costs him $850. It's $103 a year for my petrol 4x4. He paid $8,500 for his bike and it has a range of 120km before it needs to be recharged and nobody in the country knows how to fix them if/when they break down. He got it directly from China, go figure.

It is going to be interesting to watch the EV industry as people become aware of the fire danger, environmental impact of mining for precious metals, and the costs of electricity on electric grids that are near capacity already. We need forth and fifth generation nuclear plants and many many more charging stations. I would never park an EV in my garage because of fire danger.

Mechanic here. Petrol cars are 100 times more likely to burn than electric cars. The most frequent fires I attended were on dual fuel [Petrol and gas] cars- the fuel lines perish if unused and exposed to air.

There are already apartments and renters not allowing EVs to be parked on their properties here in the States because of the fire risks. I'm wondering if the insurance companies are following suit with higher premiums for EV owners and those who own any properties where they are charged or stored?

Fun Fact, most electric cars with regenerative breaking use the brakes very little. Single pedal driving is very common in EV's. I'm a recent tesla owner and love it! I also did not buy it to reduce climate change or anything noble like that, I just enjoy the technology and overall driving of the vehicle. I also don't drive a lot of miles every day so it fits my lifestyle.

How about the production of lithium batteries. There is no green footprint in that. And then when you must replace the battery after so many charges. Does it really get recycled. All extremely toxic and also deadly to lithium workers. Heaven for bid that fine car catch on fire. Most fire departments are not equipped to handle that. So now many businesses and housing parking lots are banning EVs. I imagine that car insurance is going to go up also for owning a flaming hazard.

My neighbor sheepishly admitted it cost $50K plus for his older EV, $2K for the charging station to be installed, then $30 a day on average to charge his car and $14-20K for replacement batteries after 8 yrs meanwhile my then $78K 19 yr old Hummer H2 costs $30 to drive the same distance and has lasted me 19 yrs next spring and the biggest expense has been the $2600 BF Goodrich Baja tires every 8 yrs and about $1000 in repairs in a bad year which I've only had a few times in the last 5 yrs. Good old V8 power makes sense to me and insurance will be $200 a year next yr as it's a classic at 20 yrs old. I'll never buy an EV, next up another big block or small block classic, the price of gas is worth the reliability of an old school V8 that never gives many problems and parts are cheap and no 3week wait at Tesla or elsewhere to fix your car.

Everyone should watch this. It seems that TVs will be much more expensive to operate than gas cars and not only that your home electricity cost will go up and probably way up and may also become less reliable. This will be like toll roads. You might get to work faster but the toll costs make $5.00 gas look cheap. The other downside to TVs is that they have little to no effect on reducing green house gas and maybe actually make it worse plus it will be a shock when you see how much it costs to replace and dispose of the batteries.

Yeah, using an expensive fast charger to charge up a plug-in hybrid is totally not what it's designed for. Plug-in hybrids are designed for slow charging at home or work. Some 30 amp outlets at work would cost a small fraction of what the public DC charger cost, and the electricity cost would be de minimis as well.

Eventually there needs to be an EV tax because someone has to pay for the roads and infrastructure. It is ok for EVs to free ride on petrol car owners but eventually as EV numbers rise they will have to pay their fair share. In Victoria Australia our state government charges an electric car owner 2.7 cents for every kilometre we travel. Or, 2.5 cents per kilometre if it’s a plug in hybrid. So if you have a plug-in hybrid and travel 500 kilometres in a day, you’re only travelling about 30k on electric and the rest is on petrol. Double, double tax. Who wants to go electric in Victoria?

This is so misleading! 1. The car is NOT an electric car, its a hybrid! So the electric range is tiny. 2. He is using a public rapid charger which (if anything like the UK) are expensive. If he'd actually bought an electric car, he could have done the daily commute there and back without running out of battery, and then charged at home overnight! It's videos like this that put off people making the switch to electric cars. The car he's bought, like most plug in hybrids, is only really suited to shortnlocal journeys, not 50km daily commutes!

Wow, this is one of those grey areas in cost.... Here in North America, many people leave their cars parked long term at these stations preventing others from gaining a charge. Adding a parking surcharge may not seem nice, but if it gets these folks to move their vehicle, it may be worth the cost... It just needs to be balanced

john brown he goes to the same place every day. The charging station sells him the power at cost. more or less, and makes a profit to pay for the expensive machine renting it at $0.25 a minute. Bring an extension cord. Find a place where he can park every day that is convenient and is willing to rent a standard outlet to plug in his extension cord on a monthly contract eliminating the rental of the expensive machine by using the charger built into his car which is charged by AC. He parks there every day, he can't park there every day for free surrounded by free parking. In an alley somewhere someplace there are power outlets near parking. He just needs to get permission to park there and plug in paying a fair fee. Easy for one guy to do. As for the rest of the city?

If you left your ICE car parked at a fuel pump all day I would expect to be charged a penalty as well. In Australia we have introduced fines for blocking access to a charging station. The fines apply to EV's that have finished charging as well as ICE. The fine is around $600 an offence.

I have friends with Teslas and have heard quite a few alarming stories about range anxiety and charging issues. I’m sticking with my 2006 Mk5 Golf TDI and will consider getting an EV when charging stations are as plentiful as petrol stations and it takes 5 minutes to top up from 10% to 100% charged.

In the US, the power grid would need to double in capacity to handle 100% EVs on the roads. The US power grid doubled in capacity over roughly the last ~100 years, but now needs to do so again in vastly fewer years, and in an environment where a large percentage of the natural resources needed for expansion are under sanction, and so are extremely expensive. If it's going to happen, it's going to take a huge investment, and charging stations are an easy target for taxes. We need to watch what happens in California where all new vehicle sales are mandated to be "zero-emission" by 2035. Since the power grid capacity in CA requires essentially the same expansion as the US grid for EVs, we'll see very clearly just how expensive this proposition is.

Well done NZ media, NOT! . Your EV journey is currently where the UK was 5 years ago. It wasn’t $28 to charge. Most of that was an overstay penalty due to staying connected to a RAPID charger for HOURS. Those units aren’t intended to slow charge a hybrid or any battery car for that matter. They are designed to be plugged into cars which are charging enroute somewhere. That AC connector is designed to transfer 43kW of power, enough to charge a Renault Zoe capable of accepting that, in less than 40mins. This man’s PHEV will be drawing approx 3kW. That’s the cars maximum. Of course it’s going to take a couple of hours to fill. Standard AC outlets with just a socket on the side instead of a cable would have sufficed and had probably little to no fee, let alone an overstay penalty. Good on the charge network for actually charging the fees to discourage this waste-full behaviour, I’d have been peeved to turn up wanting a 20min 80mile top up and being stuck because some Wally had decided to abandon his car there for half a day. Oh and kudos for getting in the cracking shot holding the charge cable in place, just to make sure you feel those millions of electrons flowing in.

If people keep buying them at the rate they are then there will be massive electrical grid issues in most of the country and it will be 4 times more expensive to charge them than it costs to fill a traditional vehicle and lots of people won't even be able to charge them at home. Its not a 'parking' fee its a 'using the expensive machine per minute' fee. Sadly he chose a car which only charges very slowly. If he could unplug the jug while he's at work he can charge for the same price as running that jug. No need to use the expensive machine, no big fees. Or he could get a car which does his whole journey in one. Seeing as he seems to like BMW I'd suggest an i3, its an awesome little car & I want one! On the flip side, WEL/OpenLoop aren't blameless. They have just switched what used to be free chargers over to payment & at the same time it seems as though they have slowed them down. The one here in Raglan used to charge at 42kW but now it only seems to do 32kW. Either way its misleading as its labelled as 50kW.

It's pretty easy to work out. The EVs with the biggest batteries hold about 100kWh. Might cost 25c/kWh if you charge at home. So that's $25 for a charge, and a range of 500km. You'll pay about $150 for that range in a petrol vehicle. So an EV will save you $250 every 1000km on energy costs alone. Then realise the servicing costs on an EV are far less too.

Its not only the cost of electric per mile, you got to add the cost and repairs over time and the astronomical cost of disposing of the car in such a short time. You'll never get two hundred thousand miles on an electric car as you can with the conventual gas car. With everything the electric car will cost you more than your house.

The natural gas industry pull a similar scam in a town not too far from where I live. Talked the town people into installing natural gas in all the homes, with the promise of very low gas cost. Once it was all said and done, they were appalled to find that their bills were outrageous. The gas was cheap, but the connection and administration fees were through the roof. They all signed contracts that they didn't read, and were stuck with what they got themselves into.
