Excavations at El Zotz, Guatemala, found “wonderful things”: the untouched tomb and treasure of a dynastic founder. That person lived amid disorder. For a generation or more, Tikal and other major settlements had responded to incursions from the imperial city of Teotihuacan, far away in what is now Mexico. The drama and dramatic contents of the tomb reflect that time. Covered by a temple with rich sculpture, Burial 9 exemplifies the range of kingly roles. The ruler takes life, assembles wealth, dances and dines with gusto. He may die but, like the sun, will rise to live again, charting unending order to come.
Stephen Houston is the Dupee Family Professor of Social Science at Brown University. His research interests are in Mesoamerica, especially Mayan iconography and hieroglyphics. He has worked on the excavations of several major Mayan cities, most recently the ancient city of Piedras Negras in Guatemala, and previously at El Zotz, Guatemala.

When spaniard conquered Mexico, they thought that southern kingdoms (mayan speaking but not classical maya descendants) were a different matter to handle with. So chichimeca fortune soldiers told captain Alvarado that the name of these southern lands was Quaitemallan (land of trees). The current mayan name for Guatemala is Iximulew; mayan languages are compulsory subject in every school. Kekchi maya is taught were kekchi is major population, Mam maya is taught were mam is major population and so on. In Petén lowlands most of native populations is made of kekchi inmigrants, who actually speak a descendant of classic Cholan Mayan Language.

Anytime i watch these stuff. Even Egypt. These people talk about looters. And they Don't no what happened to the stuff. 😒🧐. Or they say it must've of been the people who built tombs.,They went back and looted. 🤔 even though these people believed strongly in curses.or just knew theft was wrong. But how about looking in the world museum's. Starting with Europe. Then America etc.
