I find that when you break down a repetitive or looped bass riff/bass line like this one that at times it is better played at slower bpm... I found this out when jamming with the drummer of the band I was in many years ago & he too loved certain grooves played slower & that's when I found myself playing super fast machine gun triplets et al & other bass guitar parts at much slower bmp & I found it to be funkier also... I love fast slap or finger work also but it's all about individual personal preferences... It's also harder to do it these bass parts slower as you really need to concentrate on being spot on the beat & not make any errors that are easier to hear at lower bpm, when playing faster you can cover your mistake(s) up easier... It's always best to play slow & build up your bpm & you'll be playing fast without really doing that much as it's a combination of both hands & what they are doing that delivers these fast slap/pluck/pull offs/hammer ons & dead notes et al on the bass guitar... As Always Enjoy... .....

@bryanallenguitar67148 жыл бұрын
Jimmy McGee you should never EVER... on ANY electric instrument... practice without plugging in... EVER. the amp is part of the design of the instrument. it's a system. you risk developing horrible habits.
@JCMcGee8 жыл бұрын
Bryan Allen Guitar : It's not technique that's the problem...it's sound, tone, eq, amp settings...
@bryanallenguitar67148 жыл бұрын
Jimmy McGee all the more reason to get used to being plugged in. this is a VERY basic sound he is using here. nothing special at all. Remember that J's and P's sound opposite... in many ways though. so if you have a P style bass (split humbucker in center of body, pick guard mounted), you are not going to get this sound.
@bryanallenguitar67148 жыл бұрын
pickups are at least 75% of the sound. maybe way more. by FAR the single most important sound maker (besides the strings themselves, and fingers). If i had to take a guess, either you arent snapping notes off cleanly... or you are expecting a growly tone from an instrument not designed to do that (e.g. a p-bass. P-BASSES were designed at a time where big bands were the rage and needed to cover just the bottom without stepping on any of the 10 other instruments etc. J-Styles were designed when Jazz trios/quartets were en vogue and mainstream bass players had begun soloing. I owned a P-bass for years, hated it. was usually loaned out)

@cambridgebasslessons10 жыл бұрын
I use gaffe tape on my thumb, enables me to smack the strings hard without fear of damaging the bone. Not sure how effective it is when double thumbing. That's not a technique that I use. However, I have seen the Polish bass player WOJTEK PILICHOWSKI double thumbing with tape on his thumb.

Hi, I have a question. For left hand tap/muting, do you have specific frets that you do that on? Or are you able to do that anywhere on the fretboard? I'm having difficulty doing that in general anyway, but I get harmonics on certain frets instead of muted slap sound. Also, would lowering the action help with my problem or should I be able to do it with about normal height? Thanks in advance for your reply & all of your videos!
@cambridgebasslessons8 жыл бұрын
You should be able to make a left hand hit anywhere on the fret board. Having a low action helps, I have the action low but if it's too low I get fret buzz. Basically you've got to hit the strings hard without following through (fretting notes) my index finger (the main finger for popping) acts like a spring and pops up when I hit with the other fingers. I also use my 4th finger for popping so you should be able to make the hit with your 2nd and 3rd fingers alone. This video explains it kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoGuoqaIqMqcmpo if you're still having trouble I give online lessons via Skype. Keep practicing is my advice, it will come with time. It's not as easy as it looks. Cheers, Davey

@@cambridgebasslessons Cambridge Bass Lessons He's a bassist who's very popular on Instagram, and he's very fast, but there's this less than intuitive sort of triplet he uses against a LH/RH pattern all the time - he live's there. hey dude. i dig your idea and you play it very nicely. So please take this the right way when i say that you take zero time to explain anything and you literally play it differently each time (sequence of muting, what you mute with, beginning with an 8th vs. 16th note, etc etc etc). Also you focus way too much on the hammer-on whilst i am guessing that most people here are actually much more interested in the pattern (which is WAY COOL! dont get me wrong here bro!). can you please make another video breaking down this pattern properly and explaining your variations (which are also WAY COOL!)? i normally find this type of thing quite jaded (i.e. open strings, E dorian, natural 6/ flat 7 interplay)... but this is such a cool pattern it's worth learning. I have a very ancient notebook of "bass rudiments" and i have added your basic pattern. but i would love to hear YOU REALLY break this down and truly go MUCH more slowly in playing it. If you dont, I will!
