Storytelling and story-writing for Cambridge English: Young Learners

Can a child use Past Simple along with Present Continuous or Simple if an examiner starts telling a story in present tenses? Is it ok to say, for example, They are going for a walk. They are having a picnic. And then they SAW a parrot.

If a kid of level A2, then why not? He or she has got enough a language experince to apply to those verb forms.
