Camel Expedition. Part 10. Stony country.

After an interview with Television 4WD show, we load some swags onto Mr. Gray and head into the stony hills of the Pingandy Road. Camel camps are hard to find on this stretch, and we arrive after dark at the abandoned homestead. Although this track is extremely hard on both man and animal, the scenery is exceptional as we head north towards the Pilbara region.

My grandfather who was the first roaming padre for John Flynn who later established the Flying Doctors, had a stream of 6 camels, he would take them from Oodnadatta to Tenant Creek which took 6 months round trip. He had an aboriginal tracker Dick Gillen who he became good friends with. My grandfather wrote a few books about his travels - Man from Oodnadatta, Camel Pads and Larrapinta. Your adventures give me great insight into what my grandfather had to endure. Thank you, really enjoying your videos. I also remember seeing an opalized black opal shell that he found at Coober Peedy, he spotted from his camel, shining in the morning light. :)

Would of been an amazing time back then and incredibly tough life I will look for these books I enjoy reading history of Australia and enjoy the travelling with camels gives good insight to the days gone by glad you are enjoying it plenty more miles to come

Yes for sure..love the great outdoors. Spent many years working with Qld Museum on dinosaur digs in remote locations. My grandfather names was R B Plowman, they used to call him 'the padre'. Take care, safe journeying.

Do you castrate the bulls? If not how do they not fight? As much as I know bull camels are very competitive and would fight to death if they are in rut

Bull camels will herd up together during rut season if managed right and worked they can be used well but must be on your game at all times, they were worked in teams back in the day, just comes down to good management

Jus wondering, did you know of a guy called Rocky Page from Berri S.AUS, he herded camels up North for months, back in the 70's or 80's, I used to work for Rocky and met one of his Camels, awesome animal. Ok back to watching more episodes, cheers, Cherri
