Welcome to ‘Prog Song Sunday’, where we listen to a Progressive Rock song together and then discuss our thoughts about that particular piece of music. In each episode, you get two different perspectives- the seasoned Prog fan who has 20 years of experience listening to the genre (Nathan), and the fresh new listener who is only now discovering the world of Progressive Rock (Jana).
In this episode, we are featuring "Song Within A Song" by Camel! Please listen along with us, and continue on to our discussion to see how Jana feels about her first dedicated listen to this prog rock gem and Nathan’s background and history with this particular piece of music!

Love the reaction Jana ! 😁 Great band.. Great album ! One of their best for me...the ultimate being 'Nude'. Or maybe on another day 'Mirage'. Have a great Sunday Nathan and Jana. 😍

Camel was the first artist I saw in concert back in 1978. Definitely worth exploring further if you are not familiar with them.

I've always loved Camel because when they go off on their instrumental sections it is something special! Andy Latimer on guitar is one of the best, along with his magnificent flute play.

i favour listening to all tracks on an album.This is because taking a track in isolation may not be as rewarding; that said, I liked the change up in the song halfway through. It was cool vibe though. I like the Album "Breathless"

I first heard Camel in the late 70s and they are still my go-to band. I find that their albums are all quite different. Try listening to "Harbour of Tears", which is a concept album about the Irish leaving Ireland to live in America. It blends prog with folk story telling. It may not be to everyone's liking as it is not their normal style, but I like it a lot.

Ah, finally someone who appreciates that beautiful album: "Harbour of Tears". Very moody and perhaps, as you say, not to everyone's liking but so emotive, especially the final track "The Hour Candle", which reminds me a great deal of "Ice" in its poignancy. Good call 👍

Good taste is not dead yet ! I'd mention Dust & Dreams, concept album inspired by The Grapes Of Wrath by Steinbeck
@lilybee2955

@@AlexAlex-dr9zc Yes, “Dust and Dreams” is indeed a gem of an album too, even if you've never read Steinbeck's masterpiece (I've read it twice, the second time after hearing the album). The 'spirit' of "Dust and Dreams" differs from that of “Harbour”, but it is just as stirring and imbued with nostalgia ❤.

Hu Shufflers. Dave from London. I'm also not a big Camel fan - the one album I have is The Snow Goose. Totally agree that they are better known for their instrumentals - I'm actually not fussed on their vocals. Finally, a quick plug for their current keyboard & woodwind player Pete Jones and his band Tiger Moth Tales.

I was late getting into Camel, compared to Yes and Genesis. I Can See Your House from Here was my introduction in 1977. Love me my Camel, and my wife loves Stationary Traveller - Long Goodbyes is one for the ladies, Jana. One of the few 70's groups still on my bucket list - I've never seen them live in concert. Andrew Latimer is criminally underespected. Lunar Sea from Moonmadness is my favourite from that album. Getting excited for the Cruise. I hope to meet you on board.

Loved Camel back in the 70's. The Snow Goose is my favourite but I also really like Moonmadness. Thought they lost their way a bit afterwards but I picked up a CD of Rajaz from 1999 recently and this has some good stuff on it. No denying Andy Latimer is a top guitarist with a special sound. Glad you enjoyed the song.

Back when all I knew was the big main prog bands -- Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, etc. -- I asked some more knowledgeable prog fans who I should check next and *everyone* said "Camel". And once I heard "Lunar Sea" off this album I was sold.

Love this album. They did the whole thing on their most recent Dvd-Blue Ray. Pete Jones from Tiger Moth Tales plays keyboards, sax sings too. Well worth checking out. There is a video out there for End Of The Line.

should have seen them live back in june but Andy Latimer had to have a major operation on his back so the tour got cancelled, i was absolutely gutted but Andy's health is more important obviously.

Song within a song is a jewell of a song featuring Pete Bardens on keys on the second section of the song, or is it the tune within a song... I think you should explore more of this album, Mirage is their most famous as it contains Lady Fantasy wich is considered one of their masterpieces. But , Moonmadness is their Wish you Were here coming right after of the Magnus Opus the Snow Goose. I would suggest you also explore Breathless, Rain Dances and Nude. Nude is a concept album about a forgotten World War 2 american G.I. in a pacific Island who spent years hidding thinking the war was still on, until someone found him and he returns Home just to feel out of place. The song Drafted is one of the most impactufl lyrics in prog music or I could say all rock music during a time the Draft was still on.

One of their best songs from their last good album Moonmadness, Raindances had its moments.After that album they sank deep....but had a good comeback with nude. By then my music taste changed to new wave and lost interest in prog rock but i kept on liking the old Genesis and Camel till now.
