BAHS Class of ‘88. The Burger Bar, first Music Video Juke Box. It’s where I ended up if I ever skipped school. Music still in my head as I grab a Loop Bus to Dupple or Andrews. I worked at the Burger King across the parking lot from the PX. Good times.

This came out in high school. Played at every dance, it was one of the biggest floor tunes my whole four years. It was such a strong hypnotic beat that by the end everyone was dancing in synch almost mesmerized. It was a tribal experience.

That has to be one of the funkiest vocals ever recorded. And I like that the video has all the same insanity with weird lighting, dancing, some incomprehensible narrative featuring a special guest star, etc. that so many of the 80's New Wave and metal videos had.

My eldest daughter went to boarding school with the video's director. I asked him, because I was a teen when this song came out, and I loved it so much, who came up with the red cod piece idea. Literally he did. And went out and bought it for the video. Just a little side note. I always found that fascinating.

Word Up was NOT Cameo's first hit, it was their first POp crossover hit in 1986. They dominated the R&B charts starting in 1975 . Word Up is their most recognizable song because of Pop radio crossover.

I suggest listening to Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" as an introductory song. At one point Billboard said this song was the #1 most popular song in history. This may be hyperbole, but indicative of his tremendous influence Dylan had over multiple generations. He received the Nobel prize for literature in 2016. Just a couple of accolades to highlight the importance of his long and productive career. He also played with the supergroup Traveling Wilburys. BTW, Word Up is a great song.

I genuinely think you guys would like "Like a Rolling Stone". It sounds good, it's well-written (duh) and so snarky. Not quite as snarky as "Positively 4th Street", but close, and a better song.

Actually Larry Blackmon was wearing a codpiece not a cup or jockstrap. The codpiece is a 15th and 16th century Renaissance era European men's fashion accessory that is WORN OUTSIDE THE LEG GARB or pants in modern vernacular to protect the genitals. The Cameo in this video is the 2nd wind of Cameo. Cameo started out as a 1970s band the likes of the Isley Brothers, EWF and Larry Blackmon was the drummer and vocalist. They changed their music style and their look during the 1980s. Music became more energetic, funkier, eclectic and creating their own visual eclectic appearance which breathed new life into Cameo for the changing 1980s culture.

Listen to Fenom dammit...Bob Dylan Like a Rolling Stone. Listen to it. He has a nasal voice and a "voice that sounds like it came from you & me". Yet it works and the fact that he wrote it makes it that much sweeter. Give it a try..you never know and you've nothing to lose. Word up!
@jaquettajones

Fenom is correct. - Bob Dylan, Cher, Stevie Nicks - no can fk with them. Modern ears are weaned on Power Singers for better or worse but Larry's voice SLAPS! 80's voices were much more about the vibe and they were GREAT vibes :-D

I would describe the red garment as a codpiece similar to outerwear during the 1400s- 1600s for males. King Henry VIII made them popular because he had syphilis & his genitals were very tender to material brushing against them.
