Camera Obscura: The Viewfinder with Marcin Lewandowski

This came back in my feed two years after first encountering it. My sons and I built one and everyone at school was impressed and he was able to explain it to his class . After school children and adults alike marveled at what they could see and the crispness of the image. We continued to check things out , learning about the Hockney Falco theory and taking things all the way back to learning about Ibn Al Haythem. It all started with this video. THANK YOU

Instead of the tracing paper, you might get finer grain structure with some mat acetate. (That is if you are willing to go to the trouble and expense. You can usually find it at an art supply store.)

So after getting the picture how did you get the image out of the Camera Obscura?

The technique is shown at around 1:00 into the video -- using a cell phone held at the end opposite the lens. Looks like a good instance to test creative thinking for a more secure mounting method!

Must be a good conversation starter! On the rare occasions I break out my 8x10 view camera, I can barely squeeze in a photo between answering questions about it. You clearly have great rapport with people, which seems really important in street photography . . . well, any kind of people photography.

Fantastic conversation starter. 8x10 is definitely on my to-do list. i know the taste of switching dx to fx and fx to medium format so I can imagine the thrill of using 8X10...

Hi Marcin, I'm going to make this with my art students. I'm not great at measurements so if you could clarify a couple of things for me I'd really appreciate it. Doe the inner part have to be a similar width so the smart phone will stay upright? So i might have to check the students' smartphones first? Also I is the inner measurement about 1-2cms thinner than the outer to fit into it? Did you say the outer part it needed to be 20cm in length? Thank you very much

Marcin Lewandowski mieszkam w uk , więc pomyśle, może spróbuje 😁 Pamiętam jak znajoma (Agnieszka ma dziewczę na imię) zrobiła to jako projekt w szkole i na fb. sie podzieliła. Ostatnio za to widziałem bodajże plakat (który zamieściła na fb) na jej wystawę pt. "światło na płaszczyźnie" (młode pokolenie artystów rosnie 😜 a jeden z etapów jej rozwoju to właśnie camera obscura. polska szkoła 😁 )
