All the best movies ever made were shot on super 35 sensor cameras. Mostly ARRI. So why do youtubers want full frame cameras? If super 35 is cinematic enough for the movies, how is your hobo show in need of more? And if movies shot on ARRI super 35 aps-c sensors, does that make your aps-c mirrorless the best for movies? Full frame vs crop discussion for video.

My first DSLR was a 7D. Not knowing any better I tried to hang out with other photographers, but then realized they were snickering because my lenses didn't have the red ring. I went home that night and cried, not ashamed to admit it, then I knew what I had to do. I got some red paint and no longer did I have to hang my head in shame. Since then my life has changed and my boss gave me a raise so that I could afford full frame with L lenses.

@@no_tread_ the smart bulbs are not a quick on set especially with set up time, they often have worse colour at the same price and one of the advantages to using tape on lamp bulbs is that the side facing the camera can have no light and the other side can be completely open. This is great behind a lamp shade as the shade stays bright but is exposed and the wall behind looks like it has a bright light shining on it while keeping everything exposed. Bare in mind a lot of these films I’m working on might have seemingly “large budgets” but most of that money is not going to the camera department so we don’t have money spare for cool toys only the best bare essentials we can afford

There was a great phrase I learned while I briefly worked in Hollywood. “Content is king!” The subject matter is always more important than the gear it was shot on. Some of my favorite movies were shot on consumer and prosumer video cameras! “The Celebration” was shot on a Sony handycam. “Pieces of April” was I believe shot on the Sony PD-150, or “Once” was shot on the Sony HVR-Z1E another prosumer video camera. To your point, focus on making good content with the gear you currently have!

I've been making micro budget films for ten years. In 2013 I bought a Canon 5D Mark III, a 50mm 1.2L, 24-70mm 2.8L and a 70-200mm 2.8L...and some lights I bought from Home Depot 🙂 I'll never sell any of my kit, but need to move to something with great auto focus for video, but don't want to give up Canon color science. Which full frame Canon mirrorless camera is best for auto focus and filmmaking? Thank you.

@@mdindestin Just yesterday I started looking at the R6 MK II...apparently, most reviews say it's solid eye detect, but some say it's still not as good as Sony A7s111 or IV and that it hunts. If I can eliminate a Focus Puller on set then that's a game changer for me as a micro budget filmmaker. Gimbals solve a lot of stab issues so even though IBIS is nice it's less important than eye detect for me. Do you have hunting problems? I would have switched to Sony awhile back but can't seem to let go of Canon color. Thanks!
@ChristopherGoetting
@ChristopherGoetting 8 ай бұрын
@@shadowmossentertainment7430 I don't have any hunting issues on my R6II as long as I set the subject detection to human instead of leaving it on auto. Auto subject detection mostly works fine, but the specific modes are noticeably better (though AF will work poorly if the mode is set wrong, e.g. still on Animal when shooting people). It is a fantastic hybrid camera, but also keep in mind the R8 is virtually the same minus IBIS (and a smaller battery) so if budget matters, then that could be a strong alternative in the Canon sphere.
@mdindestin
@mdindestin 8 ай бұрын
@@shadowmossentertainment7430 I'd say you could definitely get rid of your focus puller. I agree with everything ChristoperGoetting stated. There is a lot of confusion out there on the auto focus settings. It would be a great topic for this channel. Till then, this is a great one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3epfJafjtGroLM The colors are beautiful with Canon, but if I could have switched to Sony, I would have, but because I have a big investment in older Canon glass, and I like the vintage L glass, I didn't. By the way, the adapter for DSLR lenses to the mirrorless mount works flawlessly and because there are no optics in the adapter, there is no degradation in image quality.

I made a couple of KZbin videos for my music channel, with my iPhone, wanted to do it forever .. just go for it, record & upload, it's fun! And figuring all the tech out (especially sound) is fun too if you like that kind of stuff! Your demonstration as you said was in a nice field of nature against the urban sky line. Looks great. Right? I wonder why you did not mention what time of day and that sun was behind you. Magic Hour. I wish I could attach an image taken with iPhone 13 Pro Max. To emphasize that it light is most important of all. Kudos for saying it is not he gear. Perhaps as an adjunct to your conversation on this issue, a talk about light from the sun and available fixtures would be in order. Your argument that all the grip equipment and staff you use is absolutely correct. Talking about that kind and quality of light that is needed though comes from learning what light sources are and how to leverage it. Watching your early attempts to shot shows that you became aware of this idea. I would like to see a talk about that.

All depends on the job. Different tools for different scenarios. If you do a lot of low-light events (concerts, late-night dinners, etc) with terrible lighting, then f1.2 can really save the day. Better to have the wider aperture option when you need it, and just stop down to f5.6 for groups, than to not have it and not be able to get the shot. Completely dependent on your needs and the desired look. And budget! lol

But outside of KZbin/ social media... the fast aperture blur is not used much. For studio shoots I'm usually at f4 full frame. Not a lot of clients want Professional headshots where one eye is all that's tack sharp ficus. Most companies want everything visible in a scene so I'm usually no faster than f11 full frame. If you want to see the background with your 85mm f1.2, just stop it down to f4 or f5.6 or whatever you need. You don't have to blow out the background unless you want to.

The mini LF is FF there partner. Red sensors are mostly FF now as well. Sure, there are some cinema cameras that are S35 but all the newer models are FF. This would've been a great idea for a video in 2017.

Love your channel, love your show, this video is particularly great! You are becoming the voice of the industry that is heard. Just keep on doing what you've been doing. I myself grew from 3 000 subs to 230 000 using an Iphone 13 Pro max, Rode Wireless go 2, a cheapo $2 Chinese tripod and a table lamp as a light source (still using it) so I know exactly what you mean.

Nice work. What did you use to connect the mic to the iPhone?
@INSIDERUSSIA
@INSIDERUSSIA 8 ай бұрын
I used a special connecting cord for smartphones I bough from Rode (the one they put in the box works with cameras) and a 3.5 mm to lightning connector by Apple. Now it's easier - you can directly connect Iphone 15 because it has USB-C connector, no extra cables needed@@ATHLETE.X

The biggest lies to KZbinrs about cameras for KZbin... 1. You need Full Frame. 2. If it's not 4k or higher it's garbage. 3. It must be Cinematic. If you know how to use it, most any camera that shoots video, made in the last 10-20 years is good enough for KZbin, depending on what you're filming. If you are just shooting talking head stuff in your bedroom, a web cam is good enough, even 720p. Use the free version of Davinci, upscale it to 4k, and 99% of the people viewing your content won't be able to tell that it's not a 4k beast. Technology is awesome. Most anything else you can use an old cellphone. Not your current one. Don't use the old one as a trade-in, keep it. Then remove any app that wont help you to film, turn off all notifications, put it in airplane mode, silence your current phone, stick it in your pocket, and shoot with your old phone. An old camcorder or a Gopro 3 is also useable. Cinematic means degrade the image from a modern camera to look like a film camera from the 1950's to the 80's. The buzzword "cinematic" is a joke, if you're not filming something meant to be watched on a movie theater screen. Its phricken KZbin 99.9% of "content creators" are not going to be the next Cecil B DeMille. You dont need expensive lighting, any light source that is bright enough, doesn't change the color of what you are filming, and doesn't cause rolling shutter, is good enough. Truth, audio quality is more important than video quality. That said you don't need to spend a ton of money on that either. The viewers just need to be able to hear you clearly, without a bunch of extra noise. There's tons of ways to improve audio on the cheap. For instance a cheap wired cellphone headset works as good as most cheap lav mics and will sound better than the mics built into your camera. Any jerk telling you, you have to spend a bunch of money for gear to make KZbin videos, doesn't deserve your likes or subscriptions. Do it anyway, they are just hobos trying to make a living.

I shot a music video by myself at Joshua Tree in California and later found out half of the time I was slightly out of focus. Auto focus can definitely make or break you in some situations. I could do better now, but Joshua Tree is a 1000 miles away.

Old timer (45 fun years) who pulled focus at the tail end of 35. Used everything, Arri BL, 435/535, Moviecam, Arricam, G2, Milleniums and even the occasional Aaton. The VAST majority of cinema was shot in spherical 35. Maybe 10-15% in anamorphic. And there were focus pullers who wouldn’t even take those jobs (IYKYK). Anyone who thinks that you need FF aka Vistavision doesn’t know how larger formats were used (and it wasn’t in any of the shots we’re looking at in this video). Yes, Quentin did things a little different. But Quentin is different. Have dinner with the man and you’ll understand… Currently shooting with a Z9. But if Apple Raw ever comes to Resolve, I’m going back to the H2-S like pronto.

Nice sweater, looks very cinematic! 😀The first scene with the z30 at tony 4 looks great actually! Still have to watch the rest of the video 😅 Edit: OK, I watched the whole thing.. I mean movie. The Canon full frame looks better, that 3D pop from 12:35 wow - but Nikon colours are nice too! I guess it's really all in the lighting. I'm still shooting on my iPhone XS, and photos on my Nikon D3200, I like cheap stuff too lol.. gotta upgrade at some point.. I'm leaning towards Sony, mainly because of the amazing autofocus - even if the colours straight out of camera look worse. But the face-only autofocus in the R8 is nice to have.. I wish Sony had that in other cameras than the FX6. Why do they cripple the cameras with software? So annoying, just put everything in every camera, and update them.. And I meant cardigan 🙂

ANY new camera be it full frame, apsc or MFT can produce movie grade footage because they all have logs, 4k (many new 6k or even 8k) and can shoot raw. If u know a thing or two about lightning u can make a movie-like setup with ease. The only thing why full frame is considered better is because of its low light capabilities, and the reason hollywood doesnt need that is because they have whole dedicated teams for making lightning. You dont really need fullframe but for professional work where u cant have perfect impact over your lightning those low light capabilities are a must, otherwise youre gonna have bad footage. If u do studio work with lights set up apsc is gonna do more than fine, but u will generally not be taken serious if u dont own a fullframer, no matter of your end result.

If I DGAF about bokeh, need some low light performance, and want to be able to crop in to follow myself sprinting & doing other exercises from far away in slow motion, am I better off with an A6700 or a ZV-E1? GoPro 11 turns into a potato when cropped and the 1080 120fps on my a6400 is equally rough.

Good title for a video. I think Hollywood uses Super 35 but some have adopted full frame as well. Sometimes it comes down to the lens choices of Hollywood and how big the budget is. Use what you got, but buy decent lenses for the effect you want. Color grading can also help.
