A correction: Nikon are no longer fitting twin card slots in mid range cameras. The D7500 dropped dual slots. Also one of the other channels tested and found focus issues are greatly reduced if you turn off eye AF (and possibly face AF too). It can't focus well. I can't buy it. Very simple. Sticking with my 80D on the Canon side and D7200 on the Nikon side.

Gordon just wanted to say your effort in making these video's is appreciated. You are maybe the only one (maybe 1 or 2 more) that tries to do objective ones. You can't really blame people for chasing specs the cameras are getting better but people are falling for the incremental updates thinking they are major improvements!. On top of that everyone is guilty of not fully setting up or fully utilising their camera bodies before considering upgrading. Because of a reduction in gear costs compared to first digital allot of photographers can try different disciplines, i am a portrait photographer but am currently enjoying wildlife, not very good at it but having allot of fun. :)

I agree. I have a very basic entry level Olympus mirrorless, probably from 2012, and I love that thing. Amazing photos. The newest is always fun but I agree that all these new features are just given here and there. While dslrs are dying this really looks like the best one to come out in a while.

I've just bought this camera, actually a few days ago, and just published the unboxing and first impressions...from my humble vlogger point of view I can say it's an awesome camera...So far I have used it with the 10-18mm IS STM, the 24mm pancake lens, the 50mm 1.8 and the 55-250mm IS STM. The 120fps 1080 and 4k with no crop and dual pixel autofocus are the two main reasons why I decided to get the 90D. I haven't tried the 4K yet...I am afraid my computer will pack up and leave if I try (it's an old mcbook pro 2012)I was surprised when I found out that the built-in microphone produces a great quality sound...when I switch from built in microphone to rode videomicro outdoors, if there isn't much wind, I can barely hear the difference. I love this camera. Love your videos!

They should have charged $100 or so more, put the 7DII focusing through OVF in it, and market it as a successor to the 7D line with addition of good video and eye detect technology. As it is, I would choose any of M6II, a6400 or X-T30 over this.

Back lighting is for pretty silhouettes or shadow lifted portraits...

They really couldn't market it as a 7D due to its smaller lighter build quality. Better to give it improved AF but keep it as a 90 D. I'm finding the 90D a much more enjoyable camera even with it's limitations. The 7D mk ii has only got mediocre image quality compared to my other cameras.

This is a super no-nonsense review of the 90D which concentrates on the features most buyers will want to know about. Just how much can you cover in 28 mins? However, a big selling point for me was the in-camera focus stacking feature and I can say this works wonderfully well for both macro and landscape projects. Couple this with a bluetooth capability which links to a remote and you have a very powerful combination for macro photography. The capability works with all the Canon auto-focus lenses I own which is another great benefit. I should say the algorithm just acquires the images and one needs extra software to combine them but in my experience Photoshop does a great job.

Nice review. My results differ though. For me, the 7D Mark II missed a lot of BIF shots versus the Canon 80D or 90D. In many cases 6 out of 10 photos were out of focus when shooting BIF with all AF points. Another big issue was shooting with a 1.4x Extender at f/8. The 7D Mark II only worked with 1 AF point at f/8 while the Canon 80D and 90D support 27 AF points at f/8. Using the Canon 100-400mm II lens with the Canon 1.4x Extender III and either the Canon 80D or 90D, gave you 896mm at f/8. 400mm x 1.6 crop x 1.4 Extender = 896mm. The thing to look out for is field of view. At 896mm, f/10 gave better in-focus results. Combine f/10 and 2000-3200 shutter, gave excellent BIF captures. Had to narrow down the 27 AF points to 9 AF points for a better in-focus ratio. The 10 Fps shutter speed was disappointing on the 90D. The. buffer filled up to quickly and writing 40Mb raw files to an SD card was slow. Workaround is to use the new CRaw format instead of Raw. It’s half the size at 20Mb and the image quality is very good. Little support for CR3 files yet from vendors like Adobe when using Photoshop Elements 2020. Had to use Canon’s DPP4 tool to process the CR3 files and save them as jpegs.

I like a cropped sensor DSLR because it gives more reach for macro, which is what I enjoy shooting most. I also like OVF over EVF, and DSLRs have better battery life. I concur with Gordon about the 90D's resolution. My own test was restricted to comparing my 6 year old 70D against the 90D on display at Best Buy. I made a point of matching camera settings, ISO, focal lengths, aperture, shutter speeds, distance and perspectives for both as best I could. The increase in resolution over the 70D was not nearly what I would have expected from a 12mp sensor boost and 3 generations of processor evolution. Yes, there was some increase in resolution, but it's not like it knocked my socks off either. Canon seems to have focused more on video performance (admittedly of zero interest to me) and used the 32.5mp spec more as a selling point to separate the 90D from the competition. I don't shoot RAW but I think they're using too much jpeg compression and/or anti-aliasing and not getting nearly the full potential out of the available pixels . Just look at the comparative file sizes of say Sony's a6400 at 24.2mp vs. the Canon's at 32.5mp and you'll see what I mean (8M more pixels, but a significantly smaller file size in the 90D kind of tells the story for me). I was really excited by this camera's release, but my 70D still holds it's own and I'm not running out buy one.

One of the better reviews I've seen about this camera. Well done. However, I don't know if I'd still call the 90D a true successor over the 80D in video (it's clearly not a huge improvement for photos as you stated). Even though Canon is now unlocking 24p in a firmware patch, the only real benefit this camera has over the 80D is 4k, which for most probably isn't really necessary. No 24p was a problem at first, and now that's kinda fixed, but no All-I, which is more ideal for those looking to get into more professional work, gives more room for post work and redundancy against lost or corrupted frames. The 90D seems like it's been geared more towards mainly youtube. Just my opinion. Great video!

Hi Gordon, I keep coming back to your review because it is so much a pleasure hear and see. You never have any annoying silly gimmicks like so many other channels I have unsubbed from. I think the 90D won't be the last one as far as DSLRs go. I think they have a run of about 10 years before DSLRs go bye bye mostly if not for good. Why? Too many people like me who love DSLRs. I really need a compelling reason to jump to Mirrorless. I had a Sony early mirrorless and hated it. The Panasonic was wonderful but too many things missing for what I paid. Makes no sense but the most fun I am having is my SL-2 Canon. Absolutely bonkers you think. Yeah I did too until I really got to use it. Almost as small as a mirrorless. Costs less. Dual Pixel AF. Swivel Screen. Wins all there. No headphone jack no 4k and for some reason doesn't really bother me that much. Still enjoying your review on my Sony 4K TV, allot of my friends barely have HD let alone 4K. Most are watching my stuff still on a Smartphone. Like Ketchup on Filet Mignon. What can I say. So I need a real compelling reason and as much as the 90D is cool and all, and so many cameras to choose from. I just cannot get excited at these anymore. My Samsung S10 has been doing excellent videos for me as of late more so than even my SL-2. Why? It looks and sounds just fine. Broadcast quality? Nope. But neither is any of these other cameras on the 'Tube. Once again brings up the argument, the best camera you have, is the one that is with you all the time. My SL-2 has gone out with me maybe 30 times. My S-10, always. I love so much what Canon is doing and at the same time chiding them for hobbling their consumer cameras for the sake of Cinema lines. But this one is near full redemption. I still think if I do 4K. Panasonic GH5 still is going to be my go to camera with a speed booster and Canon adapter. Keep up the great work. I think I want to buy your book. Looks mighty fine!

I feel like a real luddite... I'm very much a traditional stills photographer (landscape/travel) and this camera is pretty much the bee's knees for me. I've been using a 5DIV for the last couple of years, and I've found that just too heavy and bulky, so that's gone and been replaced with this. I've already done one trip with it and I think it offers me everything I need. I thought the 5D would be my 'last camera' but that turned out to not be the case, but I have a feeling that this one will be. I like the resolution, the joystick, the flip-out screen, and (for what I use it for) the AF system. Finally my main lens is a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4, and I've found that works well on this new body - I feel that it's good enough to give me more detail than on my previous APS-C camera, a 750D. I'm a satisfied buyer.

The noise is fine it really is an awesome sensor in that camera. Canon have actually got their act together sensor wise and its gone past Sonys current apsc offerings. Dynamic range and general muck in the image are much improved. Have a look at Michael the maven's 90D sensor video. All the horrible magenta banding that has plagued Canon sensors when you push the shadows is gone. Ive just printed an A3 shot at 800 iso and theres no issue with noise. The people who framed it commented on its quality, asking me what camera I used.

Gordon, love your reviews - so thorough! But i have two questions/points. 1) Do you know if the eye AF you demonstrated will get a similar update that the EOS R got (distance, speed, etc). 2) I'd really like to see how/if the connectivity to a mobile device has improved since the 80D and its something rarely discussed in any review...however, I can see this functionality becoming more popular and useful in the future. For example, I've often downloaded photos from my 80D to preview for people on a slightly larger screen (instead of back of camera), as well as remote shooting. I can see it possibly getting to a point where full raw photos can be backed up directly on a connected device while shooting instead of messing with a second card. It'd be great to spend maybe a minute or two in future reviews on this functionality.

Excellent and a comprehensive review as is your way Gordon. The thing that strikes me most as a 7D MkII user who shoots wildlife, I still think that there is a market for an upgrade to that camera which is geared towards stills photography, has a bigger buffer and might take advantage of the new 32 megapixel processor plus, that sort of user/owner is probably already on to L series lenses which is your point about maximising this new APS C processor. In marketing terms and if Canon's predictions of the market bottoming out at around 5 million units a year globally are correct, something called "sector marketing" might come into play whereby instead of trying to design cameras that are "all things to all people", models are aimed at specific types of user. In this respect Canon is well placed to reuse tooling on many models by just changing in 'innards', it may not happen but I wouldn't be surprised to see post Christmas, a M50 MkII and a 7D MkIII. However what is totally clear is that there is a very clear separation between stills and video, if video is your thing, mirrorless is by far the best way to go short of upgrading to serious and purpose built video cameras but then again, smartphones will probably suit most for that too ! Do you think when they are available, you might think about doing a comparative review on the Sigma M lens on both the 24mpx M5/6 and the 32mpx M6 MkII to the existing Canon M lens range, just a thought :)

I view you as a subscriber must have as yet again your review is the best out there and answers so many of the questions most camera folks would ask. As a Canon 7D ii user I totally share your view on the tragic omission of the 65 point 7d focus system , it's so annoying that Canon failed the community again with another "nearly" model when they could have competed far better with other makes. It does appear that Canon are investing more in the M range and R range so many users will wait another year or two instead of upgrading now. Hopefully more prime M lenses may appear to join the R roadmap of lenses rapidly emerging . Overall Gordon you have definitely earned another Coffee , keep them coming and thanks for your work .

Fantastic! The review that I was waiting for. My thoughts as a wild bird photographer now using an 80D & Canon primes, with centre point AF. Nice new sensor! My 80D shoots at only 7 frames/sec, but the buffer rarely fills up, whereas the buffer is now inadequate in the 90D if it fills in only 3.5sec for JPEGs. That will be annoying! The buffer cannot keep up with the frame rate. I find the 80D centre point AF adequate for birding & will rarely use the new joystick. Given also that the 45 point AF system is unchanged, I have no compelling reason to upgrade to the 90D. In fact the only improvements relevant to me are a small weight saving & a better resolution sensor. I think that the M6mkII (with improved autofocus) will be a bit small & unbalanced attached to a 400mm f4 DOII lens & I would also have to buy the accessory viewfinder. The 7DMKII has an old sensor that does not perform well in low light, under the canopy, where the birds often are. Here's hoping then that Canon will update the 7D MKII (please!) or make a larger bodied APS-C mirrorless camera. Thank you for your detailed and insightful reviews Gordon! GregHeath.net

You're very welcome! Yes, it does sound like the 90D isn't for you, although you may be surprised how easy it is to use a big lens with the M6 II, as you generally let it hang off the back and just support and steer with the lens.
@RogerZoul
@RogerZoul 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree that the 7DM2 does not perform well in low-light. It does as well as any APSC camera and it certainly beats the 80D at high ISO. It is the low-ISO shots where the older sensor on the 7DM2 is a disadvantage compared to the 80D/90D. Also, the buffer on the 90D, while not has good as that on the 7DM2, is not really inadequate, it is just not great. If you shoot in compressed raw, which you should because there is no reason not to, it does fine, as least as well as the 80D did. If you are a bird shooter, then you should find the spot AF useful for perched birds during migration, which is something the 80D had no answer for. The reason to go for a 90D is the significantly increased resolution (compared to the 7DM2) and the 10 fps. Yes, I wish it had the expansion modes of the 7DM2, as well as the 65-point AF system and the custom options, but this is a XXD body, not an XD body, so this is all to be expected. It is always best to do your own evaluation of any camera for the shooting you do yourself, rather than letting someone who does not specialized in your type of shooting have too much influence on your decisions. While I await a 7DM3 too, the 7DM2 combined with the 400 DOM2, is a compelling rig, still. But the 90D has something to offer if you want images that can be printed, because those pixels count. I would not replace a 7DM2 with a 90D unless I had no choice, but if you do macro photography along side bird photography then the 90D is a decent backup camera for birds while being a great primary camera for macro! Oh, too bad you don't use the joystick. You are missing out in many situations where you can create a better composition in camera. Not all good birds shots include flying birds and it is a mistake to focus only on that.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 4 жыл бұрын
@@RogerZoul it's true that not all bird shots are in flight, but any AF system can focus on a static subject, so I wanted to show how effective it was with moving ones. This camera's sensor is on another planet compared to the 7d mkii. It wont focus track as well the 7d but if you mostly shoot static subjects the image quality is incredible. ( The 7d mkii is not a very sharp camera. ) Apart from more resolution there's much better dynamic range and there's no magenta muck and banding which has plagued Canon's sensors when they get pushed a bit. Its easily the best crop sensor there is now. This review is only dealing with in camera jpegs and doesnt deal with the full image quality this camera is capable of.

Thanks for the review, Gordon! As usual, excellent again! Very comprehensive but geared towards actual use, and not static tests used. Looking at the 90d, or for that matter any canon camera, suddenly, I am transported again into the Canon world of compromises. Or Canon may put in something great in it, but then take away something again. I've never felt that way when I switched to Sony for good about 2 years ago. I don't feel cheated or feeling wanting as in the canon days. This review, as well as the other excellent one you did for the Canon M6-2, brings back that frustration once again. I am glad I don't have to experience that anymore! :) Now, about 2 days back, I wondered how much an 800d or 77D would cost. The 77D, according to one shop in our country has been discontinued already. But if I buy from abroad, I can get it for about U$600 body only. The 800d is around U$538 with kit lens. I wish there was a body only option, but there isn't. The reason for this is, I still have some canon lenses that I will keep, but want to have a cheap but good camera to mount them in for good times sake. I still have my 20d, but that is pretty old and it's AF is poor and DR and other things falling way behind. The 90D is out of the question, so with the m6-2 for the price and a host of other things that you should me. Even after 3-5 years,when the price has gone down, the size and weight of the 90d will turn me off. The m6-2 will be nicer, though that too has it's own issues or limitations I have to contend with. Again, thanks to your reviews! In the end, maybe, I'll just buy a cheap 800d for my last hurrah in the canon dslr. Not bad at U539 w/kit lens. I can still use my 50 f1.8 stm, 85 f1.8 usm (though I may sell that to make room for a sony/viltrox 85 f1.8), 70-200 f2.8L IS mk1, 18-135 stm, 10-22, and tamron 17-35 f2.8-4.0 di. The 800d/77d would make for a small and light camera, but not as crippled or weak as the sl2. Anyway, most likely the 90d is the last of the dslr for the xxD line. I am in no rush to buy the 800d, so, I can probably wait 5 years and come back and re-evaluate things. If the price of the 80d is any indicator, in 5 years, the 90d could go down to U$600-650 body only. Thanks to this review, I can always go back here to refresh my memory as to what this camera can and cannot do. :)

Thanks for the thorough review, Gordon. I'm mostly a still photographer of young kids inside and outside playing and am thinking about upgrading my original 7D because I'd like to boost my resolution, low light performance, and dynamic range compared to my current sensor. I've been watching your reviews of the current Canon lineup (7D MII, 90D or switching up to the full frames R or 5D MIV) and while I was really hoping that the 90D would be THE solution I was looking for, I still find myself wondering if I'll consider it a worthy update. I don't currently shoot much video, but I'm now in a job that would occasionally have me shooting 4K of nature. I feel like I'm left wondering if I should make the switch now or wait another year to see what the next iteration of Canon has in mirrorless (not interested in reinvesting in glass at the moment). Just seems like a challenging time to make an update. As a user of all, happen to have a clear favourite?

Whether the 90D is the last APS-C DSLR from Canon is anybody’s guess, but I don’t think so. As you point out, this is not really an upgrade to the 7Dii, so I suspect there might be a 7Diii, although it's actually due to be released now! Whether there'll be a future successor to the 90D is another question, but why not? As long as people wish to buy them, there’d be no sensible reason to stop making them. If you’ve got hold of the end of a goldenrod, you'd be pretty dense not to keep pulling. And I'm sure the question about what to call the next camera in the series will not be a determining factor: They will find a solution.

It should be mentioned that the M6 Mk2 has a major drawback for birding and similar photography: It's tiny, and it's light. With a long heavy lens you get a very nose-heavy rig, making it less comfortable to handhold.

Great review Gordon I watched both of your reviews on this camera. After watching your review and going on to the 90d forums this camera seems plate with numerous problems. Very soft 4K video focusing issues through the EV forcing you to use the live view which makes it difficult in the middle of the day because you can't see the screen among numerous other issues. The extra 8 megapixels don't make that much of a difference not worth the trouble of the perfect lenses you have to buy to resolve that extra 8 megapixels.

Great comprehensive review, as usual, Gordon. You always do a first class job. Just curious, did you tweak the AF "custom functions" on the 90D for birds in flight? When I bought my 80D it was inadequate with out-of-the-box AF settings, but after tweaking it's 16 custom functions relating to AF, I achieved great success when using 9pt zone, 15pt zone or even letting the camera track with all 45 points (with a relatively plain background, such as the sky). As long as I'm smooth at panning and the bird is not jumping all over the place in my viewfinder, I get decent bursts of sharp images. One of the critical settings was one which delays refocusing if the camera loses the subject momentarily. It works so well that I've panned with joggers and cyclists and never missed a shot (in terms of focus) while they disappeared and reappeared from behind trees, power boxes, groups of people, etc. The camera pauses momentarily as they disappear and then continues tracking when they reappear. The M50 is actually better though. I bought that purely for street photography, but tried it for birds in flight and was shocked how good it is.

@@youknowwho9247I use the EF-s 55-250mm STM lens, which focuses very quickly, is sharp and near silent. Keep in mind you will get a 400mm equivalent reach on the M50 and this is a super-lightweight lens which balances really well with the camera. As for AF, no way! There is no difference at all between using adapted lenses or native lenses. One lens can vary from the next (with or without using an adapter), but the focusing system works equally well. The 55-250 focuses very well. I am not a bird photographer per se, I just do some BIF photography for fun and to improve my overall panning and focusing skills. As a little exposure tip which I learnt over 30 years ago - in tricky lighting situations, if your subject is in direct light (any subject, including birds) then meter off a patch of grass which the same light falls upon. This is often easier than trying to adjust exposure while tracing the bird in your viewfinder.

I have the 90d and really like it. I will have to test cropped vs the uncropped 4k for overheating. So uncropped has no issues with heat but the cropped shut down after 40 mins in your test. What I find interesting is that you sAy it felt barely warm but the Sony though it didn’t shut down felt much warmer. Sounds to me like canon is being extra careful where as Sony basicly shut down the original over heat protection, and they raised the shutoff point or more likely just removed the feature allowing thier camera to get extremely warm vs canon that doesn’t.

Gordon Laing that’s what I figured. Sony when they had overheating issues didn’t do anything other than change the firmware so it wouldn’t shut down when it got extremely hot. As we all know heat is electronics worse enemy and can cause premature failure. It will be interesting to see if canon raises thier shutoff point being as your test showed it really isn’t getting that warm and it only does it in cropped 4k mode on the 90d where as uncropped 4K is unaffected. I am gonna text mine I will have to let you know if I get the same results. Great review as always gordon.

which one is the best camera EOS M6 Mark II (EF-M15-45mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM) VS EOS 90D (EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM) VS EOS 80D Kit II (EF-S18-135 IS USM)

Canon could provide better firmware update to their older model which then could function similar to newer model. I don't regard 90D is a big step up from 80D in many regards. I still use their 5D mark iii which is a decade old camera and it's still works as good as any new camera. Maybe it's a good time to switch to Fujifilm.
