As a retired Law Enforcement agent I will tell you the weapon will be turned into evidence as found property , the detectives will run the serial number through NCIC to determine if the weapon has been entered as stolen or lost if not they will send it to the states forensics lab to see if it’s feasible to fire a ballistic test and the original owner will be notified if he states he sold the fire arm and the ballistics returns with no matches to any unsolved crime then the DAs office will issue a writ of destruction and the weapon will be destroyed if it is determined it was used in a crime then it will be returned to evidence and held until what time it is needed as evidence in court

Ron, I definitely won’t give you any grief over showing respect to officers. I appreciate it. I am troubled by one thing you said though. If I found a semiautomatic pistol in water, I too would contact the police in case it had been used in a crime. But if it wasn’t used in I crime I’d want it back. It might be restorable. It’s just the way you said “turn it over to the police” that troubled me. I’m sure that I just took it wrong. And if you actually do feel that guns should be turned over to the police, then that’s your choice to feel that way. It’s just a very touchy subject these days with politicians doing everything they can to strip away our freedoms. Again Ron, I’m sure I took what you said wrong. Thanks for a great video.
@CameramanRon Жыл бұрын
Yeah I wouldn’t want it back hinestly, the bottom line is it was either stolen or lost in either situation I would much rather them have the opportunity to get it back
@dalewells5880 Жыл бұрын
Certainly, if the proper owner could get it back would be the best thing. The same goes for the knife. Unless the owner reported the gun stolen and gave them the serial number, there’s no way to ever find him or her.

Ron put white vinegar in a bucket to cover the knife, to remove the rust , then you can sand or wire brush it , being that it is rusted, it will sharpen good,, it's carbon steel knife,,

Depends on what county/LE agency comes and gets it. I found a trashed pistol at the end of my drive out in the country, deputy that picked it up asked if I wanted it if it came back not stolen and unclaimed for a period of time. Other jurisdictions it will end up in a blast furnace or in some officers personal collection

If you were magnet fishing, that is throwing a strong magnet that is attached to a cord into a river, and discovered something very valuable or possibly dangerous would you immediately notify the police? What would your reaction be? If it were a weapon, I would most certainly notify the police.

I had a rifle stolen out of my apartment in El Paso, TX. I reported it stolen. Two years later, I got a call from EPPD that they had recovered it, and to come and pick it up. My military ID and my signature on a release/disposition form was all it took. They told me it had been recovered out of a house during a raid on crack dealers, which definately didn't surprise me. There was a 'ballistics negative/passed' tag on the barrel. They explained this was there because they fired it to compare it to see if the bullet or casing markings matched any left at a crime scene. If it didn't pass, they said it would have been kept until end of trial, then it would be released. No matter what, it is your property. ETA: Rifle is a Norinco AKM. Scary, huh? Good thing I wasn't stationed in Kalifornistan at the time, otherwise I would have been S.O.L.

Semantics. I'm a gun guy, but I don't get my knickers in a bunch. I once called a 'fuel injection system' a 'carburetor' and had a guy 30 years my junior try to correct me. He was crying after the dressdown I gave him. His boss, around my age, laughed so hard, I thought he was going to fall dead.
@michaeltaylor4984 Жыл бұрын
The pistol will bbe ran through the system to check if it is reported stolen or lost. They will attempt to run ballistics. Depending on how rusted the inside of the barrel and the firing pin are, is if they can get the data. The owner should get it back if it was lost, stolen and if it was not used in a crime. If it is proven that it was used in a crime, the owner can forget about it.

They run the serial numbers to find where it was purchased and by whom. We once had a handgun at the gun shop for repairs, something that sometimes takes months for the gunsmith to get to it. So about 4 months later my dad was woken by a call from the Sheriff informing him that his gun had been used in a murder. Thank goodness he had the receipt from the shop. The shop had a bit of explaining to do🫢
