Great review. Can you output a clean playback through through HDMI or SDI out? I'm thinking of use as a playback device through a data projector, as an alternative to, say, using Quicktime on a laptop. Also will it cross-convert between HDMI and SDI?

Hi, that is also what I want to know. We would use it to review a file right after recording on a big screen. Also is there an option to delete recordings? One by one, or all? Or only through formating the SD Card?

Great video with a lot of great info! Question: what Smallrig mount do you use? I can't find if it fits the T7 as it does in your video. Thanks!
@camerongray1515 Жыл бұрын
According to my purchase history it's the SmallRig 2245B. Interestingly it does seem to only say T5 on the Amazon listing so not sure if it said T7 at the time I bought it, or I just accidentally ordered the wrong thing and got lucky that it works. The T7 does fit if screwed down all the way, but looking closely there is definitely a gap around the end furthest from the screw. That said, I'm actually working on a new camera rig as we speak (video coming out in a few weeks hopefully) where I'm using the CineDock: camerafoundry.com/products/cinedock It's a 3D printed part (available either printed, or you can buy the design to print yourself) and it works extremely well - a lot nicer to work with than the SmallRig clamp!

@@camerongray1515 Hi Cameron thanks for taking the time to reply, this is really helpful! I'm also working with the 2245B at my work, combined with a T5. I want to buy a system for my own but was never clear if the T7 would fit (it does, but it doesn't). Yes the SmallRig clamps are hideous (and always shown only with Blackmagic camera's). That CineDock thing sounds promising! Curious how brittle the material is, looking forward to your next videos!

On the device i use for watching youtube videos (which is an 8th gen iPad, and there will probably be people telling me to get rid of it), i was surprised that i could even hear the noise from the camera through the built in speaker (as the iPad speaker is not great), and the blackmagic was completely silent, or at least i couldn’t hear anything (i even put my ear right next to the speaker, and still couldn’t hear any noise)

Just ordered it because i cant use my ninja v SSD via a SSD 19inch Rack Docking station, hope the video assist will be able to read a 870 evo via Sata to USB C adapter otherwise i have to go with the BMD MultiDock 10G Another thing.. do you ever tried to record sound via 3.5mm Line in? because i want to go from my MKH 50 to Audio preamp to EQ to Interface and from there into the Video Assist.

That’s strange: I use the X2000 with Sennheiser wireless mic and the sound is pretty good. The stereo input on the camera and everything that is not on balanced XLR has a quite pronounced background noise, I agree, but the XRLs sound quite clean.

@camerongray15152 жыл бұрын
It does seem to run all the time and it's certainly audible but not too painful, it's probably around the same noise level, if not a bit quieter than the fan in one of my studio lights.

is your experience with the Samsung T7 on the BMVA reliable? The BM site recommends the T5, which ironically is 3x the price for half the capacity!
@camerongray1515 Жыл бұрын
The T7 works perfectly, the T5 is just the older model so suspect BM haven't updated their documentation and it costs more due to being in shorter supply, the T7 is better in every way.

Is there a davinci resolve license included if you buy this recorder?
@camerongray1515 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, of course you can use Davinci Resolve for free but this doesn't include a licence for Studio in the same way that their controllers tend to do.
@Richiecandylover2 жыл бұрын
Didn’t know you edited in Davinci Resolve, always saw it as a free option but always thought it would be a crappy option, seems I was wrong and will have to look into it as your videos are nice
@camerongray15152 жыл бұрын
I've used Resolve for years and while it's free, it's certainly up there with the likes of Premiere and Final Cut Pro, even if Resolve cost the same as those options, I'd still stick with Resolve, it's that good. I'd absolutely recommend giving it a go! I suspect Blackmagic tend to just focus on higher end customers who will be buying their cameras, editing consoles and other hardware rather than worrying about charging for Resolve itself. There is also the paid for version of Resolve however you'd only need this for resolutions above 4K, frame rates above 60fps or for things like lens correction and HDR grading.

I know, three months old comment but I even knew more about Resolve that you did obviously.

Kind of sucks that Panasonic cant just put a preamp thats even like 50% better. Especially as their camcorders have a lot of neat features like streaming to SRT with HVEC very cool feature that normally requires an external LiveU box Makes me wonder if Sony/Canon would have better inputs or not
@camerongray15152 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can't understand why it's so bad! I suspect Canon and Sony would have better inputs, they just didn't have anything 4k50 at. a remotely affordable price point.

@ledheavy26 Жыл бұрын
So you say the fethead adds its own self noise. You "need" the fethead to ad gain to try and decrease the perceived noise floor. You say your microphone is very low output. Why not just get a different microphone? Ive used numerous Panasonic camcorders with xlr inputs and didnt notice an abundance of noise with decent microphones. I havent used this particular model, but I havent read many people complaining about the xlr units audio quality, or that of the unit used in the mirrorless cameras. What type of gain level are you running on the camcorder for your low output microphone? Im not going to deny in your comparison that the blackmagic recorder sounds cleaner but it does add considerable bulk and faff to a streamlined device (the camcorder). The fact that I havent seen a flood of other comments (not that ive gone looking for them) about the poor audio quality of this xlr handle unit online, or from experience with other Panasonic camcorders, makes me wonder if your unit is somehow defective. Edit to add that I have now seen others complain about this particular cameras audio noise. I saw someone test the XLR module they sell for their mirrorless cameras and they said the noise floor was -75db, so still not that great. I guess you went in a good direction, the BM assist will be a good tool to have for various reasons. Another alternative could've been an audio recorder that triggered off hdmi timecode for a slightly less bulky setup. It's a shame the audio on this camera is so compromised, not the experience I've had with bigger models like the cx350 and dvx200, but I will revisit them to check against my initial bias.
