Free Dive Trip in the Gulf of Mexico w/ a 8' Leatherback Turtle that attacks. Note to self, Leatherback turtles are dangerous. The mouth on this one is about the size of a 5 gallon bucket except lined with a shark edge.

Please do not confuse people. This is a beautiful video of an amazing creature. The backward pointing spines in their mouth are not made for bitting. They do not allow jellyfish to come out of their mouth. Jellyfish are the main food source for leatherbacks. These turtles are an endangered species. You are extremely lucky to have seen one swimming!!!

Nice and rare footage ,but this video would deserve a title like "freediving with the rare leatherback turtle". Not the sensationalist b.s. "attack of the bloodthirsty turtle against the extreme freediver "

He wanted to be left alone, and you were antagonizing him. That's not an attack, it's defense. You wouldn't leave him alone! Sea turtles are only violent when threatened.

They eat jellyfish; they can't physically eat a person even if they wanted to. They could do some serious damage, maybe drown you, but not eat you.

You people are so internet angry. The only way any of you know these animals exists or anything about them is because at one time someone "harassed" the animal to observe and learn more about them

I work for the Barbados Sea Turtle project with Darren Brown and have also worked with Leatherbacks in Tobago. We tag turtles and track them every night, not one attack ever, we dont warn are new staff of any danger except maybe the odd frone flipper gashing a leg when you are trying to tag. This turtle was surfacing for air or checking you out much like a baby human does, if it was planning to nite you it would not have missed. Turtles are safe and peaceful creatures that like privacy>

All things considered, the diver wasn't "harassing" the turtle. The diver appeared to be observing and following the turtle. Keep in mind, this comment is opinion and perspective based

He didn't get to be so large by being passive. Massive mouth opening would be intimidating to just about anyone. Even experienced divers would show respect and just give him his space.🐢❣️🐢

Leatherbacks have a sharp, serrated beak to eat jellyfish, but their jaw strength is pathetic, you can hold open their jaw one-handed and they can't close it. So they aren't really dangerous, just intimidating. Basically they don't need strength when all they have to do is cut through jelly.

All of sea turtles species are gently so if there's peoples who said they are dangerous, there must be something wrong those peoples done to those turtles.. :) However for me, the person who filmed this looks more 'dangerous', by saw how this leatherback turtle looks not feel comfortable with his/her presence...... And the sadness is he/she then could distort the fact by wrote nonsense video's titled...... Make the person looks more 'dangerous'.....

nice footage though really captures the way this turtle moves around, pretty shameful to go and harass it but then again so many people do this so its not much a surprise to me to see this footage. the population for this turtle was around 54 thousand but by 2009 this species has dropped to only 2300 recorded female leatherback turtles.sooo........ yeah. nice footage though and don't forget that this is not completely but pretty much harmless animal UNLESS it feels threatened.

I've pissed off a Hawaiian green sea turtle before I had mah camera and I was like "GIVE ME YO PIKCHAS!" he swam away and I chased after him taken pix as I went I was keeping up with him when he stopped and I nearly flew into him, he snapped at me then I figured I had enough sea turtle that day... But leather back sea turtles got a mouth looks like da krakens, teeth errywhere it's scary. I wouldn't have been surprised if you got mauled lol like they would.

Definitely try a different approaching technique other than stalking animals. Of course they are going to defend themselves. This was not an attack or even a full on defense charge. This is a self defense warning signal and "who TF are you to be following me? BACK off!" If it wanted to bite your nose off your face, it would have done so effortlessly. Perhaps zoom towards a non "in your face" safe zone alongside the animal a safe distance away, in stead of aiming directly at him. This is less confrontational and shows more curiosity and respect.
