And if you're LUCKY and keep up your hype and fanbase, you get a piece of the pie and maybe even more if you keep it up. If you CANT and you fail to stay relevant, the label drops you. labels thrive on majority of the current day artists success. thats how they make such big money. and the artist is only getting a very small percentage of that income. (even though its much more money than most of us will ever see). this all started in the late 80's and onward. thats why a whole lot of these 'ONE HIT WONDERS" never made it anywhere else. theres a reason why they're called that. people like "vanilla ice", "Magic!" might become an example, the group who does "Stacys mom has got it goin on" "Asher Roth", they are on a contract even to this day, and because they weren't able to successfully keep up their mainstream success and people lost interest, they will be paying off that debt for the rest of their life until the day they die unless they are able to get out of it with an entertainment lawyer. Soulja Boy was almost a good example of this situation but he successfully recovered and developed his own record label which turned out very successful. these days its better to be independent. some of these artists that are huge these days like bruno mars or justin timberlake, NeYo, Usher, Chris Brown ECT. started off in that same boat. but were lucky enough to carry on their legacy with massive support because of their true raw talent and stayed relevant.
