My host and her family and friends and associates were the most civil and kind people I could ever hope to meet. But, they did not tolerate rudeness or suffer fools. Any of the critical remarks that I witnessed were well-deserved, delivered constructively in a very direct proper manner. However, I think I can understand how someone unfamiliar with the culture might be put off by some of the more boisterous individuals one can encounter. This was all endearing to me; they were the most genuine/authentic people I have ever had the pleasure to know.

She had zero tolerance for laziness, inattentiveness, sloppy work, or coming to class unprepared, and she was quick to let us know, in no uncertain terms.
