Donald do you know about the mathematical technique of contour integration over complex functions? You essentially add up infinitesimal quantities (as I'm sure you know), but you have to go out of your way to sidestep the "singularities" where the sums diverge. You have to create a path that strongly reminds me of your Pomoerium diagram.

I am a calculus dunce but i realize that there are many interesting connections between projective geometry and curve dynamics. I am especially interested in the Reynolds Number in relation to the Navier-Stokes equation, but for a really silly project about laminar flow analogies.

I am struggling to understand topology as something more than another - although perhaps a superlative - metaphor for the subject in Lacan. And in so far as the analyst may, “understand“ through a metaphor, and in so far as psychoanalysis has made use of the logic of metaphor from the start, be it hydraulics, war, etc. I recognize that metaphors are indispensable. But do you believe that topology is more than a metaphor? my apologies if this is a naïve question, but, I do hope that you will respond, time and attention permitting. Thank you for your work.

Topology, Lacan insists, is NOT a metaphor. Rather, he says (see Seminar XIII) that by the Real he means structure and by structure he means topology. There is no evidence that Lacan intended topology as a metaphor.

This took me a very long time to grasp as well, so take Freud's thermodynamic metaphor for the libido. I come across someone who I find sexually attractive, and therfore must now release that sexual tension in some way (either sex with them, or masturbation, or maybe even a jog) then a couple of days later, i come across something that reminds me, is associated with that attractive person. let's say the woman was carrying a red handbag at the time and i just randomly saw a purse commercial. unfortunately i have to go to work so i have no time to release the libidinal tension and am forced to bring the energy into work with me and i end up getting in an argument with someone at work. Why? because energy cant be destroyed, it cant only be transubstantiated, so we can see how psychic energy of libido is similar to physical energy of physiology.Are they the SAME tho? No - their similarity is strictly symbolic topology on the other hand isn't a "physical" phenomenon like the transfer of forces between bodies but a field of mathematics. the number 2 isn''t a metaphor for 2 apples. "Sex is a force" is a metaphor, but "2 is the quantity of apples" isn't. why? because math exists at the level of the letter, and therefore of the Real as opposed to "forces, and apples" whih exist at the level of the symbolic So the topology of the boreemean knot doesn't represent or display similar characteristics of the knotting of the imaginary symbolic or real, the ISR has the structure of the boromean knot, just as someone who is 6ft tall is also 72 inches tall, not metaphorically, but literally and since ive already written so much i might as well mention that it's this contact mathematical thought has with the real that makes it so indispensable to science
