I've really enjoyed watching your Camino videos (especially as I am a fellow bird watcher too!) We are considering walking next September, how far in advance would you recommend booking private rooms? Thanks!

The birds are a never-ending joy on the Camino! 😃 My favourite section is still the one to Castrojeriz because of the Bee-eaters there. And the Hoopoe. So close! For next September… In part it depends on how organised you like to be. I prefer to book everything as soon as possible so that I can then relax, knowing it’s all in place, and can also stop obsessing about it! That said, most places on the Camino won’t open for bookings until into the new year, and some won’t until March. Booking.com is an exception although some places will show as full when in fact they simply haven’t yet opened up their diary. The latest you could leave it is a different matter. If you’re thinking of that option, it’s definitely worth getting the first few nights in place quite early. It eases around Pamplona. Then things get even quieter on the Meseta, where more people book private rooms just a few days in advance. I would still advise some caution with that, for example if you wanted to stay in Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, on the Roman route. It’s good for birds there, being quiet! But the lovely La Casa de la Cura only has a few rooms and there aren’t many other options. Nearer to Santiago, it changes again, and it’s best to book ahead as soon as you know your timings. If it were me, I’d book anything really important that’s already available now (eg, a Parador, if you want to stay in one, or La Posada in Roncesvalles), and get a basic structure in place, then add the rest from March. But that isn’t a recommendation, just my own style. I hope you do go and that you love it as much as I think you will! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Why did you go first to Obanos to reach Puente la Reina? It's not necessary. You can go from Eunate directly to Puente la Reina taking a shorter way. Just see on yor map. 😁😁😁😁😁

I think it was because we were staying at Albergue Jakue, which is a little outside the centre of Puente La Reine, towards Obanos, so that route was quite a lot shorter for us.
