Thank you for posting this! My great great great grandfather was one of the original band of men william laird brought down from scotland to start the shipyard! Every man up until about the mid 1950s on that side worked there for a time, some went on to be sailors one drove the mersey ferry.

I served my Apprenticeship at Lairds as did my Uncle. My Grandfather worked there as a Ship's Draftsman.

I worked in Lairds as a stager, starting in 1964, then a crane drver. It was hard graft with the stagers, but much easier as a crane driver. At that time there were upwards of 80 cranes in the yard. Now there is only one outside crane and a few gantry cranes in the shipbuilding hall. I finished up as driver of the 50 ton crane at No 1 dock which was the northern most drydock alongside Woodside ferry. Made redundant in 1979, I enjoyed working at Lairds, and made many friends there, sadly most of them now gone.

As an Ex Lairds man, WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR COUNTRY ? ? Politicians and Unions maybe . . .

Bill , England has been deliberately de_industrialzed by the very political class you mentioned helped in their treasonous task by the unions with their own nefarious agendas!

@@boyfromblackstuff7859 The Unions just provided ammunition for the politico's (both parties ) " CUSTOM & PRACTICE " was the cry when anything modern was introduced , and were easily goaded into strikes over anything .
