The Cammino di San Benedetto (The way of St. Benedict) is a 300km hike linking three of the most important places associated with Saint Benedict: it begins in Norcia where he was born; passes through Subiaco where he founded his first monastic house and the trail ends at the great abbey of Montecassino, where he wrote his rule, laying out the form that monasticism takes to this day.
It begins in Umbria, but soon crosses the border into Lazio, where it remains for the rest of the hike.
Day 2 was all about the woodland. After leaving Cascia on the path to Roccaporena the trail followed the River Corno along a narrow path cut into the hillside. The woods were glorious and afforded views of the dramatic cliffs to one side and the river below.
After Roccaporena we entered the woods again and ascended slowly until we arrived at the wide open and fertile valley below the medieval town of Monteleone di Spoleto, where we took a well-deserved break before heading to Ruscio and my accommodation for the night.
