I had to do this mission as well and it is purely painful. I finally completed it though after just cutting corners just to stay ahead

I will add that if you cut the corner, you save a few seconds if you don't get stuck. The dev really needs to slow down the lava and speed the pedestrions up. If this was a real life event, people would come running to your bus.
