Oh my, loved this vid right through to the end so therapeutic..
They are called storm clams. I've found them scuba diving up to 30m down. Usually between 1-3 inches below the sand. If you find a scallop bed they can usually be found underneath. Probably the nicest tasting clam in NZ.

We have a smaller version in Australia we call pippies. They look exactly the same only smaller. I don't eat them. But people say they are tasty. My daughter likes them

They are surf clams. Normally wash up after some big westerly's but tend to stay in deeper water 3m+.

Those white shells, we call them sand mussels her in south africa. Think the aussies call them pillies. You can find them along the shore in the sand. Great. ait and good eating too! Love these vids man, big love from SA!

One thing to watch for drinking out of springs small steams when animals are dying they try to head to water. I grew up in the mountains of Montana drank out of the streams all my life but one day I filled my water bottle out of a spring drank it and was filling it back up when I noticed my dog getting into the water above me he started pulling on something. I went to see what he was after and in the brush at the head of the spring was a dead and decomposed elk laying in the water needless to say I started gagging uncontrollably. I’m a little more careful where I get my water now.

Thanks James. Yes correct. max down to 14 degrees north island here in winter and max around 22 ish summer. South island gets colder down to about 8 degrees in winter

I see now why your wetsuits of 3mm for summer and 5mm for winter are perfect. I'm from South Africa and have fished, surfed and dived our coastline for years. Using same wetsuits. We get similar ranging temperatures on the cold side but, warmer up to 28 degrees on our East Coast up North. No wetsuit required!

Nice one. Was that access through a mate's farm? Bet there are some big snaps near those mussel rocks when the tide comes in at night. i got one surfcasting down near Awakino that was stuffed full of mussel shells. I got my wife that espresso maker for Xmas after watching your Coro overnighter - earned myself major brownie points. She really rated the coffee and will take it on tramping trips, overnight stays at a bach etc.
