I’ve had a wood wind for several years. It replaced a green mountain grill that I wore out. So I’ve been using pellet grills for a long time. I planned on replacing my current grill with a newer model in the spring because of added features like the pizza oven. Now with this new update being able to use chunk wood it’s a done deal. Once the snow is gone I will be ordering the 24 inch camp chef pro.

Very good and clear video. Your presentation style is very good and the right balance of explaining the various features of the smoker without being preachy. Much appreciated. And you're absolutely right: the assembly of this pellet grill was ridiculously easy and clear. Labeling the bags of screws to correspond to the steps in the assembly instruction booklet was nothing short of brilliant. I also did the assembly solo (as a 66 year old guy in reasonably good shape) and it wasn't difficult at all to lay it down to install the legs and wheels nor was it hard to stand it up afterwards. But I do recommend placing flat pieces of the cardboard boxes it came with underneath the grill so you don't scratch it up while installing the legs/wheels. I'll start my first smoke on it this weekend but one question: I've never used charcoal before on any type of grill. Should I just buy a bag of Kingsford from the local supermarket or is there something else I should consider using in addition to the CC Competition Pellets?

Mike - I'm new to the Camp Chef line. I'm blown away at how clean you keep a working smoker! It also shows the build quality of the smoker. My main reason for going with the Woodwind 36 is the propane sear station. Love the convenience of a long cook, smoke option, or a quick cook grill option.

Hi, Mike. A quick follow up to my earlier comment: I’ve had the 36” Pro for several months now. I didn’t get the Sidekick, but I did buy the thermal blanket. Wow! I’ve been out doing an overnight brisket at -24F. The Pro didn’t blink. I’m sure the blanket helps, but unless I’m on maximum smoke setting, it absolutely holds temperatures beautifully. I just re-watched this presentation of yours and I don’t disagree with a thing. Smoke and bark are fantastic, some of my grandsons have said it produces the best ribs they’ve ever had, and I absolutely love this Woodwind. I do keep it in my garage between cooks, but my driveway is hard-packed gravel. For that reason alone, I wish the casters were a bit bigger as they tend to dig in as I maneuver the smoker to outdoors. There’s a bunch more I could say about the woodwind, but this will do it for now. Thanks again for your commentary and for steering me toward pulling the trigger on this unit.

It’s always outside but covered and I could let it sit for months and it fires right up. Was thinking of going with a larger one and was looking at the rectec but I think you just changed my mind. Well done nice review?

Hey, Mike- that was really well done! A note on the cover: I’ve had the Flat Top 600 griddle for coming up on three years now, and the cover is a perfect fit, stays put using the cinch straps, and even being outside this entire time it still looks like new. I’ve been thinking about a Yoder as my first pellet, but just can’t seem to quite pull the trigger on it. Thanks to you, I’m heading to the Camp Chef site now to do some shopping. 😁 This is partly based on my experience with the flat top and partly based on your review: clear and well said in your presentation, excellent video work, plus you seem like a good guy. Thank you very much for watching, Darin! Yes, I agree under normal circumstances that black is harder to keep clean but I think this would be an exception to the rule. Nice video, this the next level of pellet grills. My concern is the build quality. The body is stainless, paper thin stainless. The big question I have is how well the butterfly flap over the fire pot is going to stand up to 400+ temps. I am pretty certain it is going to get cherry red and possibly start warping. I will hold off on this cooker a little while longer. Thanks for the great review.

I was wondering if there are/ or has anyone had issues with the Wi-Fi, and the controller? Issues with updates? I own an original Woodwind about 6 years now-it's still going strong and I have had no problems with the grates. I would like to see stainless grates, but not cast iron. I spray my grates with Pam and while my food is resting, I take a paper towel and wipe the grates off. When it cools, a brillo pad and hot water and it's clean. BTW-I clean my pit after every cook-usually the same day.

I really appreciate the feedback, Sean! On the Traeger comparison, I’m afraid I can’t really provide you with a lot of information there. What I can say is that the unique smoke box feature of this cooker is not found on any other that I’m aware of. That’s the stand out thing for the most part. Thanks so much for great and detailed review. It sure looks like a fantastic smoker. many upgrades and nicer features. I really like the pro smoke box and that the lid is insulated. Question, there is no possibility of direct sear in the smoker, right. You need to use the side kick for that? Thanks
@EverydayBBQ2 жыл бұрын
Correct! You need the Sidekick with Grill Box attachment for that but honestly that is WAY BETTER than any pellet grill sear option I've ever seen. Thank you very much for watching!
@sylwiavaclavekphotography2 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayBBQ I think so too. All the grease dripping directly to the bottom is goin to make a royal mess and more complex to clean. I have a side kick, so would just need to attach it. Thanks

Great review - am toying with the upgrade to either pellet or offset and now it got harder. If you have any idea of when these are going to be available in other countries (UK here) that would be much appreciated.

I love Camp Chef products- have the griddle and pizza oven, but the hinges on the woodwind pro look cheap. Over time they look like they will rust out on the cover. Can you give us your opinion on the hinge quality? About to buy that smoker.

They have performed fine for me.

Can you tell us the dimensions on the bottom rack? I would like to know if my aftermarket grill grates are going to fit in there.
@EverydayBBQ2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know about the aftermarket grates but the website link I provided should have “specs” which will provide all the measurements.

Does the cover you show accommodate a smoke stack? I only show the one that looks to be for not Pro versions on Camp Chef website.

Yes, the one I have does have a spot for it. It just lays down toward the back cause this cooker doesn’t have it.

I have the Heavy D from Smoke Daddy which does something similar. My issue with it is that it increases the temps considerably. Even with the settings on 160 and vents fully open, I am unable to maintain temps below 250 while the wood is burning. Is the Woodwind able to keep low 200 temps with the extra wood/charcoal burning?
@EverydayBBQ2 жыл бұрын
I never cooked below 220 but I had zero temperature issues. It worked like a ghost. Added the flavor and smoke unwanted without messing with the cooker or deducting from the convenience of a pellet smoker.

Great review and I love the concept of being able to use real wood, but it looks a little flimsy. Like you said that top grate is in 2 pieces, which does not make sense, especially if you have a large brisket. How is the thickness of the smoker? Do you think it would hold heat in the cold and snow?
@EverydayBBQ2 жыл бұрын
I’ve cooked in all kinds of weather. The cooker is great quality. It’s not the thickest steel, but I’ve never had a functional issue with a Camp Chef. I can’t say that for other brands.

PINNED COMMENT: - This does come with 4 meat probes that plug into the controller to monitor temps. This can all be monitored from the App. - There is a Probe Port on the left side of the cooker for the probes to neatly run into the cook chamber. - Cold Smoke Mode or “Fan Only” I mentioned you can use a smoke tube but of course you can just use the new smoke box area for this. - I see at least one other review video that is claiming that this smoke box feature gives offset like smoke. That is NOT true. I’m just being honest. It’s an incredible leap from the norm but nothing is gonna give you offset smoker smoke except an OFFSET! - A great question just came in… does the smoke box mess with temperature? ANSWER: I never cooked below 220, but I had zero issues. The added fuel did not mess with temperature.
@dkeele2 жыл бұрын
Only thing I'd point out is that you can also use the smoke box to cold smoke as well. So no need for a smoke tube. You either need to light the fuel manually in the box and use fan only, or you can fire up the grill, light the fuel in the box, then do shutdown, turn on fan only and let the chamber temp drop until it's where you want to cold smoke at.

I want to add to this that over the past couple weeks I’ve heard of people having various issues with these cookers. Both of mine were great and I want to make that clear. There were minor assembly issues with the prototype but that was to be expected as it was all hand welded etc. The final production model was absolutely perfect. If you have issues with this cooker, please post them here in the pinned comment for others to read and discuss.

Do you recommend the woodwind or the apex? Can the woodwind still grill and sear? My wife and I are really torn between the two and don't know which to pick.
@EverydayBBQ Жыл бұрын
The WW Pro will give you better overall smoke flavor and versatility because of the smoke box. It can also sear with the sidekick and grill box add on. The Apex is built better, holds more even temperatures and has additional features.
