Research shows military veterans are more qualified academically and more experienced for jobs but the San Diego Workforce Partnership says they are often passed up by non-veteran peers.
Ahead of Veterans Day, CBS was invited to Camp Pendleton's training program that helps Marines transition to civilian life after active duty.

100% true, I got out over 2 years ago and it’s rough out here. There’s bad leadership and BS everywhere you go no matter what profession you hold unless you work for yourself than that’s different. I have a good paying job but, that check goes towards rent, insurance, utilities and other stuff. Sometime, you work more than it’s expected of you and even on holiday, where in the military you get 72 and 96. Rather still prefer civilian side though 😆 at least I can just quit at anytime I want too.

I got out In 2018, it wasn’t easy at all juggling Crippling Mental health and managing a Rocky Marriage, I didn’t even Consider the Time to Fine Schooling or Job fairs, I blame myself for Staying stuck at home in my Bedroom and living Quiet Lifestyle. Being a 03 has Only taught me to Get my head outta my ass and to Govern the ability to Take Action to any situations at work or home. I feel slow, and so behind being age 29. I don’t have Major Knowledge in anything, but I learned to Strive for Anything, it’s discouraging Af but I’m gonna try and get my foot in the door going to school for Computer Science and see where it takes me. I’m sure Many Veterans go through the same shoes. I never had that Gung ho Mentally either. I’m sure lots of Vets fall into a Pit once out of Service.

I've worked with plenty of vets, who were always late, lazy and just an all around annoying. Just because someone went to the military don't mean they have their siht together. Do I respect their service? Yes. I don't know what you mean by more respect... even though I have 15 years experience in my field a veteran with less then 2 gets paid more then me. Which I'm ok with I get it. Not to mention discounts everywhere, they have their own day. How much more respect do they need? I'm not.hating or keyboard warrior.. just want to understand what you mean by More respect.

The Veterans Transition Support group based in San Marcos helped me out tremendously. As a transitioning 4 year Infantryman, they gave me the credentials needed to get into the Safety Industry. They also helped me build my resume and interview skills in order to secure a position. I got out in April 2022 and upon transitioning was immediately given multiple offers in the safety field. I now work for an international corporation as a Specialist. Will never forget the cornerstones that helped me get here. Thank you Russell!

When I got out of the Marines in 2004 I was working as a machine operator at a warehouse. I ended up quitting because all the guys there kept hounding me to slow down because I was making them look bad. When I went into the Air Force Reserves in 2007 my supervisor gave me a list of 20 items to take complete on a Monday. I had them all done by lunch. I reported back to my supervisor only to find out that list of tasks was supposed to take the entire week. He made me sweep and mop the floors in the squadron everyday for the rest of the week. I say all this to give you a different perspective on how others will look at you. Take a step back and find yourself a mentor that can give you tips on how to succeed in that company.

I retired from the Marine Corps with 3 college degrees and worked for the State of Nevada for five years….I was recently terminated because “I’m a scary army guy that has PTSD that is going to come in here and kill us all”… But just a week prior I saved a fellow employees life. Civilians don’t care, I was a supervisor and because I followed the book, many didn’t like me. I was never late, I worked super hard and even have 2 kids full custody since I retired. But someone said that I joined the military to kill people and people are scared….(lie)….. My actual recruiting documents said I joined to see the world…and to better my self. I did that and traveled to 56 countries and 48 US States, I speak 9 languages and started my PHD…..in audiology. Ok, so yes I have 8 years of combat in 4 countries. Guess I’m the scary guy..!! But the one that submitted the complaint is a complete snowflake..!! What a slap in my face..!! The kunt is still working in the office….and I’m gone because they now prefer a fat blue haired transgendered person that lets them get away with everything. TRS did not teach me what to do when the military has no medical record of yours whatsoever past 2017 (I was active duty USMC from 2016-2021 now I’m in the army). For any transitioning vets I implore you to contact Hire Our Heroes, they will take every billet you held, every award you earned and all of the schools you attended while active duty and make you an extremely competitive résumé for any career. I used the resources they offered me and with my résumé I was offered multiple temporary jobs at a couple businesses to work legal documents for their company and a couple security jobs because of my SAF training

No matter what the recruiters say the military doesn’t translate well to the civilian sector. At most maybe being infantry and going police/ SWAT I can see that BUT most MOS’s for example 0111, 3051, 3043, Most don’t transfer in anyway to the civilian world. The military operates totally different. It’s not the same in the slightest. TRS gives you pointers but that’s it;if you did all your time and just get out. It’s more ideal to get out with a degree but not everybody wants to do school. 4 years in the civilian world is more valuable in the real world than 4 years in the military.

Depending on your circumstances prior to your ETS I would recommend getting in contact with trade schools and using your G.I. Bill. If you need to you can work a part-time job to cover the difference in pay, while you’re doing that you can set up a job in a city or state that is not overly inflated on the cost of living. Get your experience out there and build a connection with the local community. You’ll find it much more refreshing then climbing butt naked under gun fire uphill with broken glass in certain parts of the country. For what it’s worth I was an infantry grunt with 7 years of service. That being said and based on my personal experience I would highly recommend moving to parts of the country that won’t treat you like hammered sh!t for being a vet.

The nation has NO "National Veteran Transition Program", No text or manual that captures data to drive transition, or even questions or checklists to screen various "types" and generations of veterans based on things like exposures or geographic data. Military services CANNOT prepare veterans for transition because the path of transition extends to too many variable and into communities with NO national text for VSO's to follow. In fact, "Greater Good" ethics has congressional rules set in place to NOT Help veterans at the community level.
