Back in the 1990s I used to take my three little kids camping.. I always had either of my 38 special j frame on me.. or my ppk .380 .. I also carried a big hunting knife and at night always had the knife in my hatchet next to me as well as my carry gun in a iwb holster.. I also used to park my car in a way to block anybody from being able to run into my with a vehicle! Weekends were pretty full at the state campgrounds but weekdays we were about the only ones in the place.. one night a car came flying around spinning its Wheels.. I was thankful that I parked my car to block any vehicle from running into my tent.. I did however grab my powerful 6 D -Cell maglight and put the spotlight on the car which immediately took off!

I, too, always carry while camping/hiking/etc. It’s not really for four-legged critters (there are other tools for those jobs, depending on the type of critter you’re needed protection from); it’s because evil people exist everywhere, and you won’t know that you need a firearm to protect your family until the threat presents itself. And when it does, you better have your gun on you or it could cost you and/or your family their lives.

Back when I was much, much younger I had a paddle holster for a 357 magnum that I slipped over the hip pad on my backpack (dedicated for the purpose because it was stretched just enough not to be useful for belt carry). To my knowledge, nobody we met on the trail ever noticed it there. If I dropped my pack for a rest the revolver went into my hip pocket and I carried another holster for in camp. Once when backpacking with a group, about the third day someone noticed my gun and asked it I had worn it all along, and said she would have slept better had she known I had it.

Western Colorado man here and I always carry. When I go camping, I carry what many would call an arsenal sometimes, just depends. Since my favorite hobby is fast draw with my Ruger single action and that gun belt packs better than any of my others, that is what I carry on me when I camp. It is different here; nobody thinks anything of seeing someone open carrying. Last summer I was camping on the river in one of my favorite spots. There was one other guy in the campground (Roger), we met and jawed a bit at his camp, he was from back east and was gold panning. He met my dog Zule and was fine with Zule ranging the campground as our guard (he is really good at it). Roger never said a word about me packing, didn't seem to bother him in the least. Just after sundown a couple pulled into one of the spots between us in a car. Zule's hackles went up, so I put him in the camper and started walking toward the car to introduce myself. They had walked off toward the river and as I started down the path gunfire broke out, four shots in rapid succession, thankfully not aimed in my direction. I eased down the path as the gunfire resumed and came out of the willows about ten feet behind the couple. The young man was trying to clear a jam in his ridiculous "AK Pistol" and the girl was sitting on a rock. They both jumped two feet straight in the air when I said hello. Within seconds it was obvious these two were hyped out of their heads on something, and that always gets my goat, I unsnapped the Ruger. I explained that I was ready for bed and the other camper was probably in bed and it was a little late to be target practicing. I asked him what he was shooting at, he pointed to a can about twenty feet down the beach and said, "I just want to finish this clip on it, ok?" It was not a fast draw, but my sight acquisition was quick, and it probably seemed like it to them. The can flew off in the distance and I said "No, you should leave." If you think crack heads jump high when you sneak up on them, you should see what they do when a 45 Long Colt goes off and their can disappears when they are not expecting it. It was quite comical, and they decided to leave. I walked up to Roger's camp to let him know everything was ok, he broke out a beer and we had a good laugh going over the story. He said when they went past his camp on their way out, they were white as sheets and going like the devil himself was on their tale. I think he was exaggerating a little because he could see how much I was enjoying myself.

I don't have a permit, so I always open carry, but only when dispersed camping. never in a State Park scenario with frightened women and their simps all a-twitter. When I arrive in a spot, I always fire off several rounds in a safe direction to announce that someone is here. If I hear vehicle noises coming closer, I will fire off several - or many more. Only once did that fail to cause that vehicle to stop, turn around and leave. That one time was a deputy sheriff who approached very slowly and popped his lights while burping the siren. I walked out in the open with my hands in plain sight, and waved him in from 100 feet away. He asked me a few simple questions about how many where with me, because I have a decoy tent. I explained my motives and we had coffee. I was glad to see him out there.

People should absolutely open carry. If the only time the average person ever sees a gun is in a negative context, don't be surprised when they only think of them negatively. The more people see them as normal and safe, the better off society will be

My idea of camping is using a small trailer behind my FJ Cruiser. No tents for me. No sleeping bags for me. No bears coming in my tent for me! As for gun carry, I ALWAYS have a handgun on me, but in camping I'll also keep a lever gun nearby.... or an AR (but camping just seems to beg for a lever gun).

I only open carry when I am in the woods and if people get upset about that, then that is on them not the person carrying a gun. The thing is you don't want to conceal carrying when being in the woods. The last thing you don't want is your firearm getting caught up when trying to pull it out of a holster when needing it out of self-defense against a wildlife animal. When I open carry, I switch from my Glock 10mm, 1911 45acp, subcompact 9mm. A 9mm can drop wildlife animals in the woods that is a fact.

I had hoped the video would have dealt with different types of holsters for carrying around the campsite and/or with a backpack when going on longer hiking trips. I usually carry pocket gun of some sort (always) and a full size 9mm or .45 in a waist pack attached to my backpack's belt. Keep up the good work and I appreciate the humor.

Diamond D “guide’s choice” chest holsters are great around the campfire in bear country. 1791Gunleather thumb break leather bet holsters are also excellent. Leather chest holsters are great. I like Black Hills leather for my shoulders holsters.

1st rule has always been "Trust your gut". If you don't learn that, you'll have a miserable existence. That said, you don't really need to pack open, unless your need to prove your manhood is so great you can't do it with other means. If your gut says "You need the .454 today. You might meet a granny in the store", by all means carry it. But Granny won't really be much of a threat, and she might report "The guy with the huge gun on his belt." It might end up more trouble than it's worth.

1911 in 10mm or an AR pistol in .223. Lately, my idea of camping is in a motel somewhere and unless I'm in California (then again...) I'm armed. Reminds me of a trip to Stockton that I let my buddy find a motel there. We ended up in possibly the worst part of town, drug dealers and working girls, oh my. Utah permit is good just about everywhere I go, other than Cali

Least concerned with animals around here on the east coast. Most black bears will run with a little noise. Just don't get between a female and her cubs. Concealment is the issue. Especially for hiking with a pack. I've sort of decided to carry my small single stack .40, with Buffalo Bore hardcast and a side of hollow points.

3 Stooges or the Marx Brothers for opener. As far as "open carry" is concerned I find it most appropriate for being at the range, a competition but not for wandering about in public. Especially with a rifle or shotgun. We are supposed to be ambassadors for the 2nd. Being a spectacle is not being a good ambassador. The best way to win a gun fight is to not be there for it.

@keananruiters9373 Жыл бұрын
Speaking from experience, a 9mm will do something to a bear especially if you have quality heavy grain 9mm ammo and any 12 magazine and above, it should stop that bear... maybe not kill it (and that's a big maybe) but definitely stop it.

Plenty of backpackers and hunters open carry. To say always keep it concealed while camping is a bit ignorant. To say people who open carry are always the ones with cheap guns and cheap rigs is showing more of your ignorance. Let’s take backpacking….if you choose to carry while in bear country, as many do, and you have a 40 lbs pack on your back with shoulder and wide waist traps, where do you propose they conceal a 10mm pistol in a way where they could draw in time for a charging bear? Many backpackers may use a chest rig so it is out of the way of their straps. That doesn’t make them yahoo who’s just out to flash a gun. Also, what does it matter if a backpacker has an expensive gun and rig or a budget option? Stop being a gun snob. My bear country sidearm and rig isn’t cheap but even if it was, who cares? I’d never look down on another hiker for choosing a more budget friendly firearm and rig option as long as it’s suitable to the task. And if it wasn’t suitable I may offer some advice if they are inexperienced but I would just smirk all smug like the 3 of you do. 👎

Good Gun Cranks, as usual, keep up the great work. I aways carry, that means camping too, and have for almost 30 years, but........ In the instance that Wheat described, it would not have mattered what or how one was carrying, the family was sleeping. So, I loved the camping with my dogs advice from Roy, now I'll not go camping without them.
