I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Waller at a couple of academic conferences back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Like Butler, Oxford-trained. Very nice chap, if slightly eccentric. Likes his club cricket. Can't now remember if he was/is openly gay or not, but that's not really important (except, of course, to him). Well worth getting at least one of his past _Almanacs of British Politics_ (co-written with Byron Criddle) if you haven't already.

Oddly enough, I looked up the company in Slough that was an example of the changing workforce in Britain, with white collar employees making and selling high-tech equipment and trading in their union cards for excellent pay and company cars because of their place in the evolving country...there's a video on here about the company trying desperately to find a buyer after being on the verge of bankruptcy a few months after this broadcast, with a fair number of employees either being immediately made redundant or quitting because they couldn't afford to move to the new parent company's city or the travel costs to commute to work.

There still is a North South divide. Nothing has changed.

And it never will. The south cream off the backs of the graft of those in the North. Exploitative to the end.

Most countries do. East/West in Germany. South/North in Belgium, South/North in Italy too. @@whatamalike
