My great grandfather was in one of the Gulags in Siberia, interned for allegedly working for the germans, he managed to survive by eating small portions, when food arrive at the camps, supposedly many men ate large and their stomachs tore after long periods of starvation (stomach shrinking). He made it back in the end and died age 96 this year. Was a great man, fascinating to see where he might have stayed

Regarding cool drinking water: when I was a kid, one of my Uncles showed me a water container that came from one of his Uncles’ farm. It was a tightly woven flax fibre bag with a wire closure. The weave was so tight it was almost waterproof. But it did wick moisture, and that cooled the contents. I now know it as evaporative cooling. This was in Southern Manitoba on a generational Mennonite farm.

Soak pocket knife in vinegar to remove rust, might take several days. Propeller or turbine blade. Save angle iron for projects. All those trees in gulag aea area not old, it was probably cleared flat for many kilometers so there were no places to hide. Those foundation piers looked like they supported a lot of weight for large building. It looks more like everything was bulldozed and leveled. Burn what was on top, cheaper that blowing it up. I do not think they recycled the building materials that far out. Some of those underground tanks could have been for waste systems (septic), not root cellars.

Lars, where i live, the large biting fly in your video is called a Bremsen, and the one you showed was a female. The males are a different shape and they are vegetarians, feeding on flower pollen, so when you do get the chance to squash one of the carnivores who would suck your blood and raise a large welt on your skin, just remember that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, or even a woman who has to gnaw at you sometimes just to ensure the health and survival of her young. Now, let me get some "go away pain" cream on the stich gained from a local female horse fly a few days ago.
