Hunter's know how bad it feels to wound an animal and personally, burning the tag is the very least one can do in that case. I appreciate any hunter that does that, but understand it won't be the case for everyone. Also, you can say this shot was unethical and not be wrong, but you definitely aren't necessarily right either. One could argue any shot, with any bow could be considered unethical because more lethal and effective options exist than bows. Everything is clearer in hindsight and we have all been there. Busting our butts, long days, long stalks/hikes, and it comes down to one opportunity that you try to make the best of. Many would've passed up this shot and I would commend anyone to have that much self control, but I can't guarantee that I would've. The Seek One group has a pretty darn good history of making good choices and I definitely give them the benefit of the doubt. Instead of acting better than them and like you wouldn't ever make such a mistake, offer up some help and encouragement to learn from the experience. We need to pick each other up in the community and raise that tide.

Elk tough is real and you learned they are really hard to hunt. Well done out here in the west we call it hunting and tagging out is a privilege. Thank you for being a responsible hunter and showing the hard times as well as your successes. You guys rock. Keep up the hard work. From your friend here in Utah keep grinding.

Had a real similar experience on my one and only bull (so far). 60 yards broadside he had me pinned and I decided to take the shot because I felt very comfortable at that distance. Felt great about the shot when it left the bow but he took off at the exact same time and I ended up hitting him dead center of the rear quarter. Got lucky and got his femoral and he was dead 120 yards down the mountain. Got lucky and learned that lesson at a young age (20) and will never take a long shot again at an animal that has my number. There’s the “you miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take” mentality but this ain’t basketball… it’s the difference between wounding, killing, and finding an animal that we all respect and want to do the best by, so I hope you and the crew learn from this one. Good on you for showing the real stuff though and not leavin out the mistakes and reality of bow hunting!

Sorry but the gospel truth is it was a stupid shot. Never, ever should have taken a 70 yard shot on an elk, just reality. One that was looking right at you and on alert?? No excuse. Not trying to sound harsh but you have so many hunting possibilities and 100% know better. Didn't even get 1/2 penetration shooting him essentially in the bladder.

First let me say I love you guys at Seek One and have always been impressed by how hard y'all work. However, a 70 yard shot at an elk is unethical in my mind because there's too much time between the shot and contact with the elk. As in this case, the probability of a bad hit is very high and the elk deserve better than that from us.

70 yard shot on an alert animal is never a good decision. Also, was it me or was the shot almost 3ft to the right? I know the elk jumped, but I didn't think I saw it move forward, besides loading up ready to bolt. The penetration was poor, arrow speed over efficiency. Not a fan of this one guys.

Coming from germany, where we by law have to track wounded animals with specially trained and tested hunting dogs, im wondering if its just not a thing in the U.S. to have dogs trained on blood tracking. I personally find it great because the chances of the dog actually finding the animal are quite high from my experience.

Its more common in the midwest for deer , not so much out west for elk or muleys. And its not legal in every state. There are states that its illegal to use tracking dogs .
@LifebytheHorns4064 ай бұрын
Yeah man, elk are a whole different beast on a gut shot. Minimum 16--24 hours on a gut shot. They can live a loooong time with a gut hot. Their bodies are significantly larger than a deer, so it only makes sense it takes longer to shut them down. The thing a lot of folks miss is that the decomposition process doesn't start until the animal is dead, so in other words, if you take up the trail 24 hours after the hit, and the elk expired at 18 hours, you're only 6 hours into the process, not 24. They're a big, extremely tough animal. I get the rain thing though. Always nice if a guy can sneak up and get another arrow in, but sometimes it doesn't work out like this didn't. Every hunter has to make that call. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn't.

You whitetail hunters need to quit coming out west and trying these unethical shots at elk with archery equipment. Every year I watch countless videos from big outdoor KZbinrs wounding and losing elk that are inevitably going to die and it’s sickening. 70 yards pinning you is a ridiculous shot, you know better than that. They're eye sight isn't as good as we think but they pick up movement like nothing else and i believe they see the arrow coming and thats what's they jump at. Every bull or buck deer ive ever killed if they were staring at my direction when I shot they jumped but if they wasnt staring when i shot they never jump.
