So I had a wild camping nightmare this bank holiday Sunday. It was all going swimmingly until... it wasn't.
I can definitely can see the funny side of this now on reflection but at the time I had a whole host of different emotions! Not quite sure if other people have experienced this? If so, please let me know because I am very surprised by it.
Thanks for watching and all your continued support!

You’re right in your thoughts. Wildcamping is about getting away from it all. If someone came over and pitched by me, I would’ve packed up and moved on. It’s not as if you know those people, or will ever see them again. Love your videos.👍

I'm a fellow female solo wild camper👋🇧🇻and I sooo agree with you! First, being a SOLO camper should give other ppl a clue...you don't want company. Second, as a female solo camper, you are more vounerable-having two strange men pitching right next to me would make me really uncomfortable. Next time something like this happens, have a strategy ready-if they ask, be very clear in your answer. If they don't ask-pack up and move. The majority of ppl are nice-these ppl were probably not very experienced campers and just followed 'your lead' as where to camp, with no knowledge of 'Wild camp etikette' what so ever...however, us girls needs to have our own backs and be street smart, and stop being so darn pollite all the time😉 I'm planning a wild camp next week, and have already picked a spot where I know I'll be alone😁 Happy camping!👋🇧🇻😊

The boys often have their side of the conundrum too that isn't exactly pleasant, for example, walking down a dark street seeing a girl coming in the opposite direction... "How do I look the most unthreatening?" The easy one is to cross the street so if you ever see this or a head go down, feel a touch of sympathy because they are attempting to escape the tension and spare you the angst :) I do obviously see your point, I hope you see mine too... Most people are good solid people but there is no escape from the possibility of a bad one :)

@@pimplequeen2 Of course, my male friends have told me all about it, and I can see men react exactly as you describe, to try to signal that they are no threat to me. And I find that gesture incredibly beautiful🙏 Never the less, when out solo camping, what I said earlier is still what goes for me. If I can help it, I won't give strangers the 'benefit of the doubt', -that can be a very costly thing to do.

@@scorpiokitty9745 I know, especially wild camping, if my sister or partner was out there I would worry too although I would try my absolute best not to ask for safety texts or anything that would interrupt their escape :) In an ideal world, they "might" send a merciful text saying "all good here you grumpy old bugger" but even that seems a little antithetical to the point of taking an escape from the hustle of life 😶

Most people who wild camp ‘properly’ actually respect the land more than the majority of the population and they are the minority targeted and punished. This is what it has come to.. sometimes feels like spending time in nature (in a respectful and caring way) is now being shunned and discouraged.

I've been using campsites every year for over forty years, and have seen how seen how attitudes have changed over these years. People are really inconsiderate nowadays. When I used to go as a child with my parents, it was expected that everyone would be quiet and be respectful of others. Now, people are up after midnight getting drunk and keeping everyone awake. No thought at all for others. It's as though it's expected that that is what everyone is there for. Last year was the first time that I didn't go to a campsite. And I'm in no hurry to go back.

Some people especially new campers like to pitch in 'known' spots, they think they are less likely to be moved on if they pitch near to someone else's 'successful' pitch when in reality the opposite is true. That said it's her own fault for not having a good night, she should have been more assertive that she wanted the privacy rather than just letting them pitch near then complaining about it afterwards.

OK let's remember that on 'campsites' they tend to ALLOCATE a pitch to you so it is possible that you can end up next to the previous person who pitched. Wild camping can be unpredictable re who turns up FACT. 👀That unpredictability is not just about wild camping it is a 'WILDCARD' in the mix which means you can have good, bad, or indifferent scenarios occurring. 👀 Unsocial, intimidating, alcohol fuelled actions or even these days; drug related incidents that could put you in danger. FACT.👀 For a female on her own that's a heck of a risk, however even a male on their own can be at risk from other males. 👀The current situation means that public holiday being a specific event is no longer the case as now wild camping can take place at any time? 👀 Wild camping with someone you KNOW and I have friends have gone with me in the past (BUT we respect each others peace and tranquillity) has some real benefits.

😂😂 bless you! Totally get it, so annoying but I’d offer 3 tips: 1. Move away if uncomfortable or tell them to pitch away from you (they asked). I know it’s hard when put on the spot and you are a polite person. Got to put yourself first especially if wildcamp is your time and you were there first. Next time I think you would move away. 2. I always carry a wee jar with me on wild hikes and camping. An ordinary pickle jar with a lid. Easy to use, good for women, wee and empty and reuse. Priceless. I recommend it to everyone for exposed terrain. Can do it in the tent discreetly 3. Bank holiday holidays/hiking and camping are out. Just back from Snowdonia and never ever I saw Betwys y Coed so packed. It was insane on a Monday when normally it’s empty and lovely.

Agree totally with what you are saying. Have wild camped a lot in Scotland and being in wild areas never bothers me but people's motivations for camping so close would. Having said that inexperienced campers sometimes feel some sort of conformation or sense of security in camping next to someone else. I have been on virtually empty campsites in the past were a car load arrives and they empty out and pitch up right next to you. Still not as bad as one experience I had in the Highlands once where I was sharing a bunkhouse with one guy who seemed a bit duck out of water in the outdoors. We had a couple of nights drinking and chatting then on the third night the police turned up and arrested him. He was on the run after carrying out a GBH attack in Glasgow !

I usually want the solitude as you do and find it strange why.some people try to join-in like that. When they put their bags down I would have said.sorry i thought you meant over there, explain that I've gone there because I just want to be alone with nature and offer to move my camp.somewhere else. They would probably not think they had been intruding, and would just go elsewhere. Sounds like they weren't bad people they just didn't read the room, and to be fair you didn't give them any clear messages to read but expected them to share your own understanding. British people might have picked up subtle cultural cues but not necessarily. If you say what your motivations are most people will accommodate. You're a lovely person and people will still like you if you are more assertive. Sorry, don't mean to mansplain, just what i would do. Hope this helps.

I expect some people wouldn't realise that someone would actively not want people pitching nearby, they may have thought you'd feel safer and want to socialize with them, or maybe they are inexperienced about what a good pitch location is so thought best to follow your example. I think this is a really useful story for you to share because it's not something I would have necessarily have thought about myself and it's a good reminder that whilst for some people hiking/camping is a social thing for others it's the opposite and it's important not to assume. I can imagine it must have been so frustrating and not at all relaxing for you.

I wouldn't think this was a moan clip. I personally would consider myself downright rude to pitch so close to a solo camper or another tent and wouldn't dream of doing it. I would have thought the kind of unwritten rule is to pitch out of sight of others and outside audible range. I parked in a supermarket car park (pre pandemic) late at night so it's nice and empty to shop in peace, then when I leave I see someone has parked their car right next to mine, in an empty car park. I've also been inside an empty Tesco around 9pm looking at coffee, and had someone stood directly behind me pressuring me to leave. It gets weird sometimes, feel like I attract weirdos to come and ruin my peace, so I didn't fancy camping this bank holiday because there's no doubt I'd end up in a mountainside butlins. Sadly it happened to me a couple of years ago in the Peak District, found a lovely remote spot miles from anywhere, pitched watched the sunset whilst having some food, I had my two dogs with me, one growled, I looked over and a hiker with a pack was walking behind us about 100 metres away, what's the guy do? Yes he sets up a bivvy about 60 feet away, unbelievable. He could have pitched anywhere. Most of the night I had to tell my dogs to stop growling because they could hear the guy moving about. Ruined my whole two days. So I under stand how you felt. The whole point is to get away from the World and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Same thing with me on the same bank holiday , I'm too a bit of a loner camper love the solitude, pitched my tent in a quite corner of an empty camp site field , next thing a group of 6 people about 20ish pitched 6 feet away from me , then a family with 2 , 9 year olds next to me . went to bed about 10 after a days walking , the group got more loud and drunk , around 1 am had to listen to one of them vomiting for an hour , the 2 kids were running around shouting while the mother was screaming at them to shut up , . 6am the kids were back out running around shouting , mum screaming at them to get back into bed . Got up pack up and moved on , no point in being like them . May start to wild camp when things have calmed down with the land owners .

My interpretation of this is that either they were inexperienced campers and couldn't find a pitch until they saw you. Or they were just part of our friendly community and thought you would be ok with it. Personally I would have asked if they'd been struggling to find a pitch and say I'm happy to help them find one or if they wanted to stay closer to where you were just explain it may be more suitable for all to have a bit more space, especially in regards to needing the Loo. If they'd been funny at this point I'd have told them to do one! Or you being a solo female camper could have moved at this point. Awkward AF though as the Corporal would say!

Solo wild camps are a different experience than a communal mini village, getting out alone is must sometimes despite the vulnerability, just to have the focus of setting up. choosing your perfect spot, preparing your meal how and when you want and other points during your stay, going with others allows pitching help, a chat, shared stories, shared menus, gear, spare pegs etc but may not be the reason you went out if you were looking for the solitude and privacy, obviously next time you would be more mindful of how the "can we pitch here" kind of ask and how you can address it, hopefully you can get out again soon.

Right with you on this, I have lived in a van for ten years and done a bit of wild camping in my time. The psychological quiet of solitude can offset some of the noise of ordinary life, I'm not a huge fan of classical music but I often listen to it for its lack of social/personal noise. I think people are unknowingly insensitive and your sensitivities left you trapped with tolerating their unwitting trespass :) Its a funny game... Just try not to let it get so bad that you lose it and bark at them to be quiet... That will rattle your head for days!

Completely understand your reaction and frustration Amber. A few weeks back I was pitched alongside Innominate Tarn when some people arrived later in the evening on the opposite side of the (fairly small) tarn and put their music on, talking loudly until well after I had gone to bed. All of this seemed bad enough, until I heard the sound of a giant ‘insect’ right over my tent very early in the morning, as they got their no doubt ‘awesome’ drone shots without a care for anyone who was still sleeping or simply didn’t want the intrusion.

It's one thing for them to pitch their tents beside you, but it's quite another for them to then sit out until after dark talking and drinking. Had they pitched and then gone to sleep you probably wouldn't have minded so much, or perhaps if they had cooked a meal and invited you over to join them, but frankly the behaviour you have described was just plain rude on their part. Better luck next time, and keep up the great work with all the lovely videos.

Wow Amber I feel so sorry for you. You have nothing to reproach yourself for in your feelings , thoughts or actions. Unlike some prat who just commented about Snowdonia being a small place and it is your problem. Wild camping on one's own is just that and you shouldn't have had to put up with anti social behavior from others so close. I would have been tempted to empty my bladder near their tent in the hope that they would move on . Seriously the fact that you had more than a disturbed night as a female on your own I think you dealt with this in a very dignified manner. Says a lot about you. Keep going as I thing we all love your videos.

3 seconds into an Amber video... I'm chilled to the bones. So well videoed, narrated and backed with soothing music. I totally get you and your experience. You are so far from moaning Amber, some people just don't get what you do and what you need ... your space, private time, no desire to interact... that is why we go into the wild, to be a neighbour of nature and to have a break from human contact... I melt with you and your mindset. Stay safe Please share more of these videos. G :-)

You're not the only one with a Bank Holiday disaster Amber. My wife and I had planned to drive to Patterdale in The Lake District, then hike so Silver Bay for our 2nd wild camp and vlog. We drove 110 miles on the Saturday only to find every single car park had restrictions preventing us parking overnight. After a few stressful hours, we made the reluctant decision to drive 110 miles back home. On the flip side, we did discover a local walk the following day which made up for it.

Couldn’t agree more, I like my personal space when wild camping. I did the South Downs Way last year and after a long 25 miler I stopped at a family campsite on a summers day, it was rammed with tends, bbqs, large groups and alcohol. I had the same experience and I perfectly know what you're tryin' to explain whit your definition about yourself! I'm similar to you and I think the same during camping, concerning space and silence. I love to write and simply to think, during camping. Imagine that my "neighbours" did like yours and they walked many times to take pictures to the sunset, to the panorama and so on, talking until 2 A.M. and then I talked to them about the incredible stupidity level of their life. They told: "Ah...ok...So after some minutes we will go to sleep..." "It's better for all of us", I told... Sorry to be so opened, but it's what I think about this type of people. In life I tell often that labels stay nice on bottles and books, but these people taught me that sometimes I'm wrong ;-) I think we havo not to move away: THEY, have to be respectful. To the Nature at first.

You know something, I'm a local to the lakes, born and bred I'm 43 and been camping wild since about the age of 9, and even I'm avoiding wild camping atm due to the massive influx of people even in my quieter local areas near ennerdale and was dale. I've been to places I thought nobody would venture only to find groups of 5~6 people there. Crazy times, but as long as they are respectful of the areas I'm fine with people enjoying being outdoors. Personally I'll wait till the colder weather comes around again or bad weather before I venture. Back out, it seems to thin out the crowds. Thankfully most are taking rubbish and not lighting fires, so there's that lol

Amber - am with you in every respect. I was out high up in the Dales on Sunday eve - slightly off piste - was amazed to find another person (single woman) next to another tarn about 600 m from where I'd pitched. It felt polite to say hello and try to reassure her I was a 'safe' bloke - though not quite sure how you do that without sounding overly creepy (any advice?) - I did give my full name and seemed we had some common links - so I hope she googled me and was a little reassured. I did offer to relocate a few miles away - but like you she was very polite and said it would be fine and not to up sticks etc. I suspect by then I'd already ruined her planned wilderness camp - so - Sarah from Leeds - sorry :-S

The moral is...keep away from northern Snowdonia! I live in north Wales and have spent a lifetime climbing, walking, scrambling, exploring underground in Snowdonia but I'm as likely to camp in the Trafford Centre as northern Snowdonia these days! I just keep well away because the place is getting worse every year and since the pandemic and travel restrictions, Snowdonia and other NP's have become no go zones for a lot of outdoor activists. The further south you go into the NE Wales uplands and into Powys, the quieter it gets. I could find a wild camp spot in the Berwyns and you have more chance of finding Lord Lucan than finding me!

I would very politely have asked them to pxss off. Had that not helped I would have told them even more clearly that they should go elsewhere. Had that not helped I would have made a decision: pack my stuff together and leave or make life miserable for them. I have a lamp with a build in speaker. Turn it on full blast. I’m completely on your side girl. You want to be out in the wilds & peaceful away from others. If you wanted to camp a couple of meters away from other tents you’d go to a campsite. Plus your on your own, if that was me I’d feel more unsafe that if I was completely alone. They didn’t care about keeping you awake into the night so don’t feel guilty about waking them up. Hi Amber, I'm very new to your channel as I read an article in M.E.N (Manchester evening news!) So after watching your nightmare wild camping video I can only say Awwww. Nightmare. I'm thinking that once you had spoken with them, you must have given them the impression that you were more welcoming than you actually wanted to be? But in the same breath there's no way that you would have been comfortable with them camping within 3metres of your tent. That's just wierd and freaky. Maybe the man on his own misread you and hoped to get to know you better? And I also thought that you were way too polite by not packing up so as not to seem too rude. That just proves that you're a super nice person, especially as you had to hold in your wee!! 😂 Anyway I hope that this experience won't stop you from wild camping, maybe put up a sign stating "Private wild 🏕 camp!" Good luck and God bless. 🙏👍😘

Your unease is totally understandable, wild camping is not about being near people. The isolation is a big part of the appeal for me, especially in somewhere as vast as Snowdonia. It's weird enough if someone sits next to you on an empty bus, this is just on a whole different scale.

I'm with you on this. Nice that people want to be sociable, but for me wild camping is a time to and leave it all behind. The world we live in is so busy and so very fast. I want to feel like it's just me there. You absolutely cannot clear your mind, breath and reconnect with yourself and nature if some randomers set them selves down so very close. And there's the thought that you don't know who they are and if they may possibly be a danger. Don't let it put you off a bank holiday trip, just use it as experience and next time put your interest first and find a plan B pitch instead of risking potentially appearing rude. Having said that, may not happen to you again! Good video, really enjoyed watching some of your stuff recently. I'd like to make a more vids but hate hearing the sound of my own voice on tape!

There obviously is a reason (or more) why people go wild camping. You're absolutely NOT anti social. But rather selective social. I don't like to feel trapped cause of others who feel a need to socialize and I don't want to. So yes, I really could "feel" your uneasyness. To get out of that trap...pfff, I don't know. Just fake a call that made you leave. Or just run! Lol. But hey there is no law you have to please therefore to stay. Easier said than done maybe... Anyway, thanks a lot for opening a little window to your thoughts and feelings...you dare to show vulnerability. That's strength! Again..ty.
