In today’s video I’m going to show you a handy camping hack that uses these tent stakes for cooking. In a previous video, I removed the galvanized coating because it could be very dangerous if it was left on when using them for this purpose. In that video I go into detail on how to easily remove this and why you need to do it. To use tent stakes for camp cooking, first we will need to bend the tops at about a 90 degree angle. Do this for four tent stakes and arrange them in the pattern shown keeping all of the heights at the same level. Before you build the fire, make sure the pot or pan won’t fall off. Now just make the fire around the stakes.
As an extra tip, if there’s no wind and your fire is struggling to start, grab a paper plate or something to use as a fan. This will supply the fire with extra oxygen to give it a kick start. Don’t add too much air before the fire could be established.
These tent stakes are small and easy to pack, making them a great alternative to a portable stove. If you’re going camping you’ll probably be bringing tent stakes anyway so you can use your extras to serve another purpose - cooking.

I used a variation of this method for a two person 1 month early Spring hike. I suggest adding a disposable pie plate to the setup. You pierce the pegs through the plate and then reuse the same holes in later uses. The plate contains the fire and the ground doesn't hot, never mind burn (Leave No Trace). The plate also reflects back up heat to your pot. It essentially weighs nothing and is leftover after eating a store bought pie. With leftover material after sewing silk sleeping bag liners, I made a silk scrunch sack for the pot, pie plate, and pegs, to contain the soot. The same pie plate lasted the trip and years more. Almost 20 years later the pegs and scrunch sack are still good, though I am using a different pot now.

Also, I used 3 aluminum pegs. If you let the fire get too big and leave it too long they can melt, though. For a small cooking fire you'll have no problem.

Very simple easy and fast way! How long did it take to get that amount of water boiling?

Freizeitflugsphäre it was surprisingly fast. Maybe a couple of minutes. I turned the camera off to charge a bit only to realize it started boiling.

At cadets (25 odd years ago) we were shown by one of our hiking guides, a old school game keeper on what he packs for a outing, all it was: 3 - 4 tent pegs, tin of beans, pack of beef jerky, ziplock bag and a block of solid fuel. I have no idea of the health risks doing this, especially with a modern tin of food, it's probably not recommended. He removed the top of the beans with the tin-opener on the Swiss-Army knife (Modern ones have ring pulls now), place the lid on the floor (sauce down ;), place half a block of solid fuel on top, empty half the contents of the tin in a ziplock bag, add some jerky and a bit of water to the tin, remove the bean paper wrapper and add to the fuel block, place 3 - 4 tent pegs into the ground, locking the bean lid, now fire base in place and throw a few matches on the pile as well as a few twigs add the tin of food, which has now become a billy pot. That was pretty much it, jerky beans (And by the look of our guide, I bet a few nips of scotch added for good measure too). I have never tried it, but it seemed to work pretty well.
