Next time you're out in a thunderstorm with lighting hitting close by to your campsite, get out of your tent and stay inside your vehicle until the lighting has passed by. Your tent poles make terrific lightning rods. That's one thing I learned to do long ago after seeing a tent get hit by lightning - you don't want that to happen! A vehicle isn't foolproof but it is safer.

I have been in similar camping situations. Old Canvas tent, a few tarps. Actually even made a trench around the tent to divert the water away. 2 days and nights of rain, never ending. At least I was up a few inches in the highest part of the camp ground. I kept the water out of my tent but I was still just soaking wet due to the 100% humidity from the 48 hours of rain.

Sometimes when it's raining hard and you have to leave if you talk to the campsite manager or owner they'll let you leave your tent up for another day to come back to when it's not raining. They might charge you for another day but sometimes they don't. It's a lot easier taking your tent down when it's not pouring rain. Especially if you have a large tent like yours. It's worth paying for another day when all your stuff is soaked and you're tired.

I grew up in logging camps and spending months at a time in tents and tent trailers. I can tell you that you can do yourself a simple favor by digging a trench close to the tent and having it drain away from your site ahead of the rain storm. Other than that, I love the rain and it looked like a good time!
