As a native Michigander and former camper, I couldn't help but laugh at your attempts to rid your tent of our bugs! It brought back so many memories. Watching Cody outside and then hearing and seeing your wife battling the bugs in the tent had me laughing out loud. Summer in Michigan is bug season and I hibernate until mid-September when it's safe to get out in the woods again. Hope you're able to enjoy our beautiful state in Autumn when it's truly spectacular. (It's also beautiful in the winter but I think that may be an acquired taste.) Great video!

Born and raised in Arkansas, now living in the U.P. for the last 4 years. So awesome to have you up, enjoying the beauty of the U.P.. If you ever return to the area (I own the Newberry News in Newberry....just south of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park) let me know. I'd love to do a story about your travels through the area and get your thoughts on your adventures through the area!

As native a Yooper one solution to the bugs is to be in the sun where there's a breeze. That pretty much means on the lake. Nighttime bon fire on the beach avoids the deer flies, and bug spray at night takes care of the mosquitos, but if you're in the woods, God help you because pretty much nothing else will. We're pretty much experts on which repellents works best (as a matter of survival). If you're driving at night the bugs literally sound like light rain hitting the windshield.

Coming to the U.P. in August. We stay away from woods & rivers... and long ago stopped tent camping. It is one of those things that is appealing.... but bug bites get old quick .. and last too long as you heal. We stay in a 40 ft diesel RV with a king bed, A/C, etc.. at ages 83 & 81 we rv to see the local highlights -- we will do Tahquamenom Falls... etc and we use Golden Buzzaround mobility scooters, and I still carry & ride my Trek bike --- but hanging out in the woods at a primitive campground is ok in your 20's & 30's .... and spraying ourselves with Deet gets old too. Glad you left when you did. Very glad you came to Mich. Glad you decided to use cgs. Btw, our MI state parks allow campfires... and just about everyone builds one, so there are fewer bugs. In 2021 we did 4 State Parks in the lower peninsula and had NO bugs... and we do not build fires. Traverse City State park is really nice, and Harrisville, and Bay City, and Algonac. Algona is across the street from water, and Harrisville is on water.

A few things I've learned just this past couple of years: Deer flies are attracted to things that move, and they hone in on anything that looks like a "head". A baseball cap is your friend. They'll keep trying to land on the cap instead of your hair. One of those safari hats with a neck flap would be perfect. Of course they tag team with mosquitoes. If you sit perfectly still the deer flies will lose interest and go away but then the mosquitoes find you. ;-) I hike with a dish towel, and I use the towel to swat my back as needed. Hardly the ideal situation but it works. If you can concentrate the effect of a Thermacell in a mostly enclosed space (tent with door open) its effectiveness increases dramatically. I minivan camp, and I find if I light a Thermocell inside even with a sliding door open and windows cracked, even with my dog jumping in and out and the bugs following, the bugs fizzle within minutes and are gone. In related news, I plan my menu so that I can prepare food in the minivan or outdoors. If the bugs are sparse I have a delightful cook-out. If the bugs are really really bad a roast beef sandwich inside by the Thermacell is pretty good too. ;-) Now that I've frequented several places over several years, I've discovered some places are chronically terrible with bugs and others are relatively bug free. Often these places are within a 20 minute drive from each other. Haven't found the magic potion yet of what makes one or the other, but if I find the bugs are really bad I will retreat to one of my reputable bug free camp sites. FYI I was camping near your location over the same holiday date using these methods. I don't claim I have all the answers but I feel I'm on to something. ;-)

With Kellie's sensitivity to some insect bites, you made a very wise decision to go to a motel. From our time in the northern woods of Maine, we learned that head nets are very helpful to prevent bites and preserve sanity. While in those wooded areas, we also wore light weight long pants and shirts. Hang in there and keep on campin'. We love watching your travels.

Anytime I had a difficult camping situation it was due to flying insects. I wore a head net over a wide brim hat, long sleeves and long pants. I prefer shorts at camp but protection was imperative. For my van I cut no see-um mesh to fit my sliding door and the rear barn doors. Custom fit mesh slide over the two front doors t provide ventilation when the windows are down. I found insect repelling bracelets at REI that are very effective. Leaving a campsite is a PIA but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm 75 but when I find a good slide and swing seats that fit I love to play and remember my youthful days. Kid Cody (lol), that was fun to see your face after the first slide. I keep two of those telescoping fly swatters in my van, one for the cab and one in the back.

Interesting what you say about winters. Your bad experience reminds me of my dad's farm in Alberta Canada. When it isn't snowing it is horrible horrible horse flys, mosquitoes, deer flies etc. My dad got used to it. I never did. Now on Vancouver Island, BC we just had a particularly harsh winter that even killed many of our trees. The bugs are fierce this summer. Will try a smoking fire. And haul out my bug zapper for when we are at home. Love your channel. One of my two favorites.

I've never had a bug experience, while camping, this bad. As a rule, I avoid camping near still bodies of water. I think that's prevented a lot - but certainly not all - issues with insects. Also, unless the temp or wind are serving as a deterrent, or I'm packing up, I never leave the tent door open. It really puts a damper on the bedtime mood if I have to spend time swatting insects inside the tent too. Plus, they always sound & feel bigger when you're either asleep, or just dozing off, and they find your face.

I’m originally from Canada, I can attest to the deer and horse fly issues. On scout hikes we used to put peacock feathers or a stick with a bandanna/flag on our packs or hats to keep them out of our faces. Totally helped. We’d also play “horse fly baseball” with our hats. I remember smacking a few into trees or rocks and watching them splat with satisfaction.

I’m using Thermacell products and they make an amazing difference in the number of pests I deal with. They have tabletop models and there are also personal models you can carry with you or attach to your clothing with a Thermacell holster. To clear out mosquitoes/flies indoors I have a rechargeable “tennis racket”-shaped bug zapper that kills them on contact instead of just repelling them. Good luck!

Really bugs can be so bad up here that the real good time to be outside is before memorial and after labor. Sometimes if you move a few miles it's much better. Also when the wind is from the north by lake Superior they are blown back into the woods. Nights they lay down. During the day we put our lawn chairs on the picnic table hopefully in a breeze and it's a lot better than on the ground. Screened bugsuits if you have to be amongst them. warm south wind days are the worst

I remember camping (or trying to) in the Grand Marais, Michigan area one summer when the deerflies were out. They landed on DEET-soaked pant cuffs, got inside the tent, or just drove me crazy with their incessant noise. I had to pack up after a few hours and headed South across the bridge. Though I haven't tried it yet (I purchased the materials just in case), I've since heard that a blue plastic Solo cup covered with adhesive gunk diverts their attention from heads/bodies and attracts them to the plastic cup where they get stuck and perish. You might try that defense against them. They are even bad sometimes around water bodies in the lower peninsula where I live.

Bugs can ruin a camping trip for sure. I bet you could get some kind of bug netting around your awning. I was in Flat Tops Wilderness in Colorado one summer. At any given time there were hundreds of mosquitos circling me, biting through the bug suit. It’s a similar thing as what you’re experiencing, if there is a lot of water from heavy snow melting, the entire region becomes a mosquito hatchery.

This video reminds me of when I went camping in the UP one May and little did I know it was midge season, and was constantly swarmed with midges! Probably would take that over horseflies, though. Summer in UP is no joke!

Just a heads up that the deer flies are usually horrible at Black River Harbor in the Ottawa National Forest too. Drove us out of there a couple of times! Hope you get up to Copper Harbor. The Keweenaw peninsula is special. Also recommend Bayfield, WI and the Apostle Islands. You can take the ferry across to Madeline Island and enjoy a brew at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe. Hang in there with the flies!

Try the fly traps and yellow jacket traps hang them in the trees away from where you are. Kind of expensive but if you're staying for a few days worth it.

Try the Black flag handheld bug zapper. It takes two AA batteries and is fantastic camping. You can buy it at Lowes or Home depot or even Amazon may have it. It costs between $8-$10.00 bucks. I'm a novice camper, just went camping for the first time this past July fourth weekend and believe you me when I tell you, that thing was amazing! Bugs will think twice and tell their friends before coming anywhere near your campsite. Cheers!
