Some queens just don' have good genes and won't succeed. That's why it's best to catch multiple so you can have at least one that does really well. I have a Camponotus novaeboracensis ( a North American wood nesting species similar the ones in Europe) queen that has gotten well over 200 workers after their first hibernation. I suspect many of the deaths you experience were from nanitics and workers dying from old age. Nanitics and workers from a queen's first few generations might not live as long as later more well-fed generations of workers.
@AntsVienna

Yes, I am suspecting nanitics too for now. Hope this next bunch of eggs grows into a nice workforce :)

Mine are in a wakooshi Mercury nest. I've had them since maybe October so I'm not suprised she only has one worker and 2 larvae. However, the worker never leaves the tube to forage in the outworld above so I'm rather concerned they'll not get fed. I have resorted to feeding them directly in the test tube but that's not great. Perhaps it's best to only put food in the out world even if it means they go hungry for a while due to being timid. Perhaps their hunger will get strong enough that the nanitic will eventually leave to forage. As well as this, the cotton of the test tube has gone a light grey/blue colour so it needs changing but they are so stubborn and will not leave the tube when I offer them a fresh one. Finally, the other odd thing is that the queen, for a few months now, has been carring round a brown clump of some material. Attached to it are two larvae and I'm not sure if they're getting fed properly. Oh well. It seems I didn't realise how serious it was when I was told C. species can take ages to get going.
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna 3 жыл бұрын
Hello again Jonathan! light gray/ blue color of cotton in test tube is okay... I've seen much worse! I suggest you keep feeding them in the outworld. Small colonies are very careful and shy, so they only leave the nest at night - if at all. You can only know they are eating if you place food and it's gone. However a single Queen and worker won't need feeding more than once a week. What you can give them twice a week is a drop of honeywater. Hope this helps you out!😉🐜

Using over 10 year old Antwiki page as a source won't give you up to date info. I know latin a bit myself and I understand the point, that a is wrong, but both AntWeb and AntCat clearly say ligniperda is the only valid taxon name, also a myrmecologist A. Purkart says so ;)

@@AntsVienna A comment on Latin naming of Camponotus ligniperda Two Latin spellings of the ant which Latreille had also named in French “fourmi rongé-bois” have been in use by various authors over the last 60 years: Camponotus ligniperda and C. ligniperdus. This disparity causes confusion (but is in reality not a very important issue because it does not lead to confusion with other Camponotus species). The latter spelling assumes that “ligniperda” is a female adjective attached to the female noun Formica and has to change its ending to “-us” when the species is transferred to the masculine genus Camponotus. The other spelling assumes that Latreille used “ligniperda” as a noun in apposition, which remains unchanged in combination with a genus name of any gender (§ 31.2.1. and § 31.2.2. of ICZN). This interpretation as a noun (meaning “wood destroyer”) was clearly expressed by Kutter (1977) and I consistently followed this usage throughout the last 40 years. Indirect conclusions on Latreille’s naming intention, considering the vernacular compound word “rongé-bois”, appear problematic as I received different proposals by native French speakers. The deciding point in this debate is that “ligniperda” is no accidental linguistic fault-this word really exists as a Latin noun and Pierre André Latreille, as a Latin-educated catholic priest, and Heinrich Kutter, as an old-school pharmacist educated in the 1920s, should have known this. To have this view confirmed, I asked the distinguished Latin expert Prof. Thomas Baier from the Institute of Classical Philology of the University of Würzburg. He fully concurred. This is what he wrote in a letter of 15 July 2013: “.... assessing your problem according to the rules of classical Latin, ligniperda would be a noun, which always is written ligniperda in connection with masculine and feminine, thus not being adapted in its suffix-just as you have assumed. A parallel form is parricida (murderer of relatives). Johann von Schwaben, who killed his uncle Albrecht von Schwaben around 1300, is known since then in the history books (and in Schiller’s Wilhelm Tell) as “Johannes parricida”. What applies to Swabian dukes also applies to ants, si parva licet componere magnis...”. Seifert 2019 bruh

The year before had 3 that were doing awesome with around 30 worker each and then they all just died. The last queen died a month ago. Q1: I had no DIRECT casualties due to hibernation i catched a C.Ligniperda Queen in July 2020. I hibernated the queen+15w in the testtube in my refridg. at 11°C in oktober 2020. i got them out of hibernation End of March 2021, no worker casualties, after 2 days they were already moving a lot and started gathering. In just a few days 15-20 eggs that hibernated changed into larvae and got big and changed into puppets within i would say 1-2 weeks and hatched after another 2-3 weeks, there were approx. 5 ants born handicaped that got killed or isolated, now i have 29 healthy Workers and another 6 puppets (that are even bigger now).

Hello there! Handicapped ants are not unusual for Camponotus, almost every colony has at least one in some point in time. My colony has a worker that can't move one of her front legs. However since alts have 6 of them she manages to walk no problem :)

@@AntsVienna I got one that also had 1!! handicaped leg, she could move perfect, still got outcasted...another one had their legs and antenna curled up, they put her on the rubbish heap (alive)...ant live is hard :-/. I guess C. ligniperda is very delicate concerning the performance of their workers :-D

I started my Camponotus Ligniperda colony just recently. I have 2 queens with max 5 eggs and one with 3 nanitics, 1 big larva, 2 small larva and lots of eggs. One of the two actually had 9 eggs but she ate like 4 or 5. Not sure why. She is in very calm place. Only thing that comes to my mind is that she was either hungry (but I fed her before...) or it was just way too many for her to keep. So far I am happy with them. I hope they will grow into nice big colonies. Also I have a problem feeding them with some protein source. If I give them a mealworm the dont eat it at all. Any tips?

Hey there. Everything sounds fine about your Camponotus. For feeding you can try fruit flies. Watch this food guide for ants kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKTRnY2Ngs96bbs

You could try to give your ants some honey or something like that to boost their energy during hibernation. Also I have Camponotus Herculeanus colony and their first nanitic died after 3-4 months of living and it was weird.

The only weird ant death i had was a colony of around 50, a Neoniger colony, doing really well, just decided to kill off their queen. it was really weird. i put the workers in with another small colony and they seemed just fine, the eggs i put in with a third colony and the accepted them.

I've been told this scenario happened to a few people by now... but no one could identify the trigger that made the workers kill the queen. Thanks for letting me know AND sorry for your loss
