17:01 Mechanical Engineer here - Gaunson was really close to what actually happened! It's not that the tip was going slower, it was that it was essentially a hinge point for the deceleration brought about by meeting the safe. So as soon as the deceleration begun, it exerts MASSIVE force that creates a moment load (bending force) along the entire dart. It is a bending load since the object is being forced to change angular momentum and spin, but of course, the rest of the dart has WAY more momentum so only the tip broke and spun off. Where it broke is called a "stress concentration" because that is where there is abrupt change in geometry and also it was thin at that portion. Hope that helps!

This dumb dart has never dropped straight because the center of mass is not forward of the center of drag. Archers describe this metric as "front of center" (FOC). For an arrow to glide oriented along its vector of travel, the majority of the mass must be concentrated in the front. Archers ofter add dense tungsten field points to their arrows to increase FOC. Likewise, increasing the drag at the rear of the arrow by adding more or larger vanes or fletchings, shifts the center of drag toward the rear. Their stupid dart failed because the fins on the dart were made of heavy metal. The center of mass is WAY too far back. For the future, use a dense tip (tungsten), a light weight shaft (aluminum, fiber glass, or carbon fiber) and durable but light weight fins (tough and flexible polymer).

Possible idea for future darts! Instead of having metal fins built into the entire design, that you have to constantly beat back into shape lol. Why not just create a straight dart with mounting points for plastic fins that can break away on impact and let the dart penetrate more? I’m sure someone has thought of this before lol just my 2 cents

The correct term for what the dart did to the log is split. Chop is when you're cutting for example a tree down and you hit it multiple times in different areas to carve into the wood. I'm not sure if I was clear in my attempt of explaining. English isnt my first language. Anyway, there are even different types of axes with specific characteristics that favors one or the other, splitting axes and and chopping axes.
