In this video I will do a test to find out if a 600va computer UPS inverter can handle 14.8 v 150Ah truck battery because it is designed to operate with a 12 volts 7ah battery.

Good video! 1. You need to clean the battery. Any humidity in the air will cause the dirt on top of the battery to conduct and discharge the battery. 2. Batteries with plastic cases do not need to be placed on any type of insulator when on the ground or concrete. This was only a problem with the early batteries that used a porous rubber case around the cells. 3. Take some time and clean out the inside of the inverter. Dirt in there plus humidity will cause shorts and problems with the inverter. 4. Add a fan to the driver transistors heatsink inside the inverter and make sure to add additional cooling holes. It will prolong the life of the inverter. Heat inside the box will kill the electrolytic capacitors and the mosfets used to create the higher output voltage. Remember that manufactures use cheap Chinese caps that fail with heat. I sometimes replace all of the electrolytics with temperature rating greater than those originally supplied with the inverter. Keep up the good work, now on to solar charging of the battery!

UPS might overheat when large capacity battery is used. heatsink inside UPS is usually small and not designed to long continuous operation because manufacture expect that battery will get discharged before internal components overheats. you should add fan to cool internals of ups.

I have a question my ups is 600VA and if i need to run my ps4 slim for 13 hours then how many amphours battery i need my ps4 takes 370ma and the internal battery is 7ah and at that battery my ps4 can run only 4 mins
@valuemastery
@valuemastery 2 жыл бұрын
@@everythingandroidpro1850 According to spec, the PS4 Slim uses between 55 and 110 watts. That's in line with your measurement of 370mA, which at 220V (I assume, you did not mention the voltage) equals to about 80W. So, for running it for 13 hours, you will need 13hx80W=1040Wh of stored energy. When the battery has 12V, it will need to have a capacity of 1040Wh/12V=87Ah. However, this does not include storage and conversion energy loss, plus you will need a reserve in the battery to not fully discharge it - Lead Acid batteries don't like full discharges, they will be dead in a short time. So your battery should be at least 120Ah. And of course, there's no point in running only the PS4. Maybe you would need a TV also, which uses power, so the battery would need to be even bigger. What's the point of running the PS4 from battery for 13 hours while the TV is connected to the mains? Then you could simply connect your PS4 to the mains too.

I know the concern about putting car batteries on PSUs is the desire to run high loads and at longer times than design parameters. I want to run the same load (router, modem and sleeping computer) for longer than my typical 30 minutes. Is this still a hazard?

the size of the battery is irelevent, you can stick a 12v 100000000000A battery and it will still run, the UPS only draws the current it needs, so for the original 7Ah that might have lasted say 10mins on ups, the larger 150A will last maybe 10-15 times longer, the 1000000000A longer still. Some off grid houses use submarine batteries with their ups, ive been using an old 270Ah marine battery on my old 500w inverter without any issues, standard lead acid batterys will eventually fail as they are not designed for deep cycling.

Since Mr Electron is using an old battery, he can experiment with it. But for people who are going to try this with a new battery, please note that for tubular battery, you need atleast 6 to 8 ampere of charging current. The built in charger of the ups only produces around 1 amps of charging current. As Mr Electron is showing in the video, he is using a separate charger for charging the battery. Now if you guys want to use a new battery with a computer ups, add a charger with atleast 8 amps for 100ah batteries, 10 amps for 150ah batteries with a cutoff of 14.4v.

Now my battery bank is 200 kilos but it lasts for around 8 hours at half load giving me time to plug in my generator. Thanks for this great work and to answer your question, overcharging. I have a standard UPS/Very large telecommunications backup battery type system. I put it together years ago. It charges passively and does not do anything until the power goes. It can keep all my devices and network up for a day. (I generally use it for my full size fride/freezer though) Nice to see somebody else "sort of" use a similar system.

@@dineshjaryal1224 Short answer, yes. If you have a 12V UPS only use12V batteries in parallel. I have never had a problem with overheating, etc. Just keep in mind the UPS can only charge at the rate it charged the original battery. If you need to charge your bank quicker, disconnect UPS (may not be necessary) and put a 12 charger on batteries at a rate acceptable for your bank size. I hope this helps.

@@dineshjaryal1224 As mentioned by the discussants above, it does not matter how high the battery capacity you have, as long as it is still a 12V battery. If you want more 12V batteries, you must connect them in parallel. Never in series !!! The UPS takes as much "A" as it needs ("A" behaves differently than "V"). Just look out for immediate withdrawal from the UPS. In your case, it's 600VA. You have to subtract 1/3 from this, so in reality it will offer you a maximum rated power of 400W (you can power a device that has a power input of up to 400W for a while). For longer power supply, make sure that it is up to 350W consumption (practically 600VA = 350W). It's good to stick to half, ie 600AV = 300W - your UPS will last you a very long time. That's enough for a TV, all the lighting in the house (if you have an LED), a computer, a 3D printer, ... Fast charging of the battery UPS does not provide, because it charges and maintains the battery with a value of several mA. Any car charger allows you to charge quickly. Charge each battery separately. If your charger can handle high outputs (depending on the manufacturer), it is possible to charge 12V batteries in parallel. Never in series connection !!!
@DL-kc8fc
@DL-kc8fc 3 жыл бұрын
@@deanbevier3389 Yes, the battery capacity does not affect any overheating, but only a higher output at the output than the nominal one. If the UPS is built to draw 350W (600VA), it is good not to exceed this value and the UPS will operate reliably for any length of time (my UPS 650AV IN LINE works like this for about 20 years in conjunction with one solar panel in a holiday cottage that has no power supply). energy). I chose the IN-LINE UPS because it does not require 220-240V to start from the mains. Just connect a 12V battery and the UPS will start working on its own. OFF-LINE UPSs require a connection to 220-240V to start and are therefore suitable for computers, etc. No UPS overheats, because the consumption is strictly monitored, for example, I turn on only the TV and lighting. If I want to turn on the computer, turn off the TV, etc., etc, etc. All this only from the old UPS. :)

Most of the Computer UPSs were designed to work under 30 minutes to save the making cost battery size. Connecting bigger batteries like 150Ah, there are some problems ahead, Transformer material are chosen cheaper rather than heat factors. Power switching devices like MOSFETs are also cheaper. Charging current for 150Ah battery is not sufficient from such UPSs .. they Might take larger time to get full charged. But I appreciate the way of your language and demonstration .. nice

The UPS itself can charge the battery and likely supports at least stage 2 bulk charging and stage 3 float charging and maybe a maintenance trickle charger voltage. Using the laptop power supply only provides a crude stage 2 bulk charge which will produce a lot of hydrogen gas. The real question is if the UPS charging circuit could withstand the much longer duration stage 2 bulk charge of the higher capacity battery and would it cutoff, current cycle or current limit if the battery was depleted enough to require stage 1 charging, even car chargers often have a manual switch for stage 1 charging and recommend that the charging should not be unattended (the current cycling is very noisy that I often can't stand being in the garage when stage 1 charging, fortunately you don't need a lot of stage 1 before stage 2 is possible).

@@clownbooface2624 True, a UPS is not intended to be used continuously in such a fashion, but it would work till it fails and indeed has worked in the field for most of a year in Trinidad and indeed had not failed on the project to the point where a manager against my advice, ordered the UPS to be reconditioned for use in the Houston office after the Trinidad project completed, my advice was to junk the UPS after the project. Our competitors had shorted out the fuse box at the Trinmar office and smoked their computers so our line manager had asked me for how the power differences between that of the Trinmar office and our computers could be temporarily accounted for, hence we simply used the inverters in a UPS continuously by cutting a few wires. Seems like what was required in this video was for an even shorter duration than what we had done with a UPS at the Trinmar office. UPS's are fundamentally simple and robust.

Without even watching the video I already know the answer is yes, it will work on that battery. There is a fairly wide battery voltage tolerance in those UPSs (I'd guess it would be around plus or minus four volts) and the only effect on a larger battery is that it charges very, very slowly since that UPS is designed to charge a much smaller capacity battery. This could cause sulphation in a lead-acid battery which would reduce its life. A LiFePo4 (Lithium Iron-Phosphate) technology battery would probably be a better choice in this application.

late, but so others see, NEVER use laptop power supplies for charging external batteries. They are only power supplies, not chargers. They cannot monitor the battery, and as such will overvolt and possibly ignite the battery. The laptop monitors battery charge and shuts off the connection to from the power supply to the battery when needed, the power supply will never shut itself off. It is simply an AC>DC voltage converter, and nothing more.

Most good UPS systems provide their own charge to the battery via the battery input leads such that whilst mains is present, the UPS provides output power and filtering from the mains whilst also charging the battery via THE SAME LEADS as are used for the battery to provide power when the mains fails. The beauty of this method is that the "switching" to battery power is instant when the mains fails. Equally, as soon as the mains returns, the battery commences charging immediately. UNLESS the battery used is of the CORRECT voltage i.e. nominal 12 volts (14.4 volts charge voltage) the battery can easily be OVER or UNDER charged. This is generally NOT a simple conversion if different battery chemistries are used (e.g. using Li-Ion cells to provide 3 x 4.2 v = 12.6 peak or 3 x 3.7v = 11.1v nominal). Such connections can be EXTREMELY dangerous since the max charging voltage of 3 series Li-Ion cells is NOT 14.4 but 12.6. Charging continuously at 14.4 volts when mains is present (as would be the case for Lead acid batteries) WILL cause SEVERE OVERHEATING and FIRE. To use Li-Ion batteries will ALSO require SIGNIFICANT, COMPLEX and potentially EXPENSIVE modification of the UPS circuitry.

or you could use two buck-boost converters and a microcontroler to control them, making the ups think it's a regular lead-acid battery. not thrusting my life on it though

How about if I use LiFePo4 battery, 4S cofiguration?
@boblewis5558
@boblewis5558 8 ай бұрын
@@eone2345same problem. The different battery chemistries will mean that you would have a permanently excessively high voltage across the battery. A lead acid battery is charged with a fixed voltage of, typically, a 14.4volts. Other battery technologies tend to have a current limited charge current NOT simply a constant voltage. So it would be easy to overcharge any non lead acid battery and cause overheating, explosion and/or fire. It is essential to understand the original design of the UPS before making such changes.

Put 3 4mm wires of same length in parallel to connect the battery to the UPS and as short as possible. Also the UPS usually turn of if the voltage drops to 10.8V and is measured at PCB level, so if you have 11.5V at battery and 10.8V at PCB it will turn of anyway. Every mV counts on low voltage with that amount of current.

Can this ups charge the 150ah battery which u use?
@juancarlosquintana2111
@juancarlosquintana2111 4 жыл бұрын
The ups charging circuitry will put 13 volts to charge any battery you conect there. Now suppose you use a boat battery (I think they use 24 volts DC) in that case the cells just charge to 50 % of their nominal voltage. Now if you are thinking to use with more elaborated array of batteries, like telephone switch office where they use certain 48 volts DC battery Banks you definitely will need other charger ....in any case when a battery specification is certain voltage times the amps , it tells you certain amount of power x time that the battery will mantein that voltage. If your load is less than the specified the you could calculate the volt amp time into your load voltageXamps used and that will result in the time that you will have that voltage present .

You can run multiple 4mm wires in paralel to make up for the smaller section. Don't run 31A through a 4 mm^2 wire, it will overheat
